any chance sigma kappa colonizes here?

Our houses are sooo big. Feel like we need one or two more.

150 in a pledge class is too many.

The chances of new sororities coming here has already been discussed on this site, go back a few pages. Overall, once all the construction is done with DZ, Theta, AOPi, and PBP, the school will probably add at least one more sorority and that sorority will probably be put into one of the swing houses. As you said, the sizes of these chapters is really the driving force behind this. The only problem is choosing which one to invite to come onto campus. All the sororities with respectable nationals are already here. So any sorority that comes here will struggle with not just trying to find pledges but also struggle with the financial aspect of it.

Look-up (here on greekrank) what is occurring at Indiana University. Their sorority system recently grew and is now getting grief on greekrank for doing so because of tier/housing perceptions.

Alabama tiers will be affected when our sorority system expands, and poor feeling toward The New Kids On The Row may end up uglier than Indiana's situation.

The nine NPC groups available to join at Alabama: Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Phi Epsilon, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Theta Phi Alpha, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and Sigma Kappa.

@by is correct, any of those nine will more than likely struggle financially if invited to colonize. Some may not desire to belong here.

And adding just ONE group, even the perceived best group, will not significantly reduce a pledge class size problem.

So will we look to add three or four groups and allow them to go unhoused if they prefer? Since SDT traditionally does not FR, will these groups also be allowed to not FR if they prefer?

SK would be a logical choice. Well respected nationally. Founded at a prestigious New England school and the girls from north will know it well. Makes for a good pick!

What about the chances of SDT becoming a full-fledged sorority here?
They're already on campus, why don't their nationals or panhel do something to increase their numbers? restructure and what not. That would help the numbers as well. Don't they already have a house somewhere? include them in the construction.

I'm pretty sure at one point SDT did participate in formal recruitment. I could be be completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure the reason why SDT stopped participating in formal recruitment is because they weren't that popular among PNMs and they didn't have enough actives to speak to PNMs during rush. They do have a house and it's by Jefferson and behind the bus hub. If the were to rebuild they would have to relocate and I literally have no idea where they would go. I know Phi Kap is planning to move into Sig Ep's current house (since Sig Ep's moving into KA's old house), so SDT could buy that land but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be able to finance it.

In my opinion I think they need to either start participating in formal recruitment again or leave campus. I don't think it's fair that as the NPC sororities have to deal with increasing numbers they don't have to. I understand that they're happy being a small back row sorority, but it's legit just not fair in my opinion.

I'm sure if SDT had their way they would prefer to participate in formal and be housed on the row, but it's not as easy as waving a magic wand and suddenly being able to compete on equal footing with everybody else.

Instead, they do what works for them, which is to target PNMs who are specifically looking for a different kind of experience. It's a historic chapter with many loyal and supportive alumnae who would rather see it continue to operate this way than see it shut down because they can't make quota/total.

I mean they obviously are happy doing what they're currently doing but it's just not realistic for there to be a chapter of SDT here and not have them participate in formal rush, and may I remind you that SDT is a NPC sorority. Like they're barely active on campus and they have low numbers anyways. I think their chapter here should be disbanded and their house can go to one of the off campus fraternities or the university could seize their land and Phi Kap's land.
Idk, in my opinion it's not fair for the other houses to struggle with growing pledge classes while SDT CHOOSES to sit back and watch. At the end of the day SDT is a national sorority recognized by the NPC so it literally makes no sense why Panhellenic here allows them to not participate in formal recruitment.

Does anyone know why SDT is so small here. Like I get that they choose not to participate in formal recruitment because they have in the past and it didn't go over well but does anyone know the history as to why. I know they've been on campus for a while too. And I know that they're recognized by the NPC so what happened to have them be so small?

At the end of the day it's up to their nationals as to what the chapter does, and seeing as they're a single letter chapter (I.e. one of the first 24 chapters of SDT) it's pretty unlikely that they're going to close it down. SDT at UT Austin is basically in an identical situation and they tried to do formal recruitment a few years ago and it was a disaster. Imagine being a PNM and getting only SDT for pref (which happened to tons of girls)-- they ended up getting less girls than usual because the PNMs (rightly) felt like they were put at a disadvantage by SDT participating and dropped out completely to try again

They sold their old house to APhi, who lived there until they tore it down.

Sigma Delta Tau IS ALREADY a "full-fledged sorority."
They are happy with how they operate their recruitment. Why would you think they're not? Yes, they lease a house from the university over near the Campus Drive parking deck.
I expect that once construction is complete on Sorority Row, they will take one of the current swing houses and remodel or even replace it. All the current NPC sororities will be glad to have them back!
There's more than one way to be a sorority.
FYI, their old house was at the corner of Bryant and Colonial, where the new Phi Mu house now stands.

There are talks of 3 other Panhellenic Sororities coming to campus in the future: Sigma Kappa, Tri Sigma, and Alpha Xi Delta. Sigma Kappa or Tri Sigma will most likely be the next ones to colonize here on campus, although I'm pretty sure both have been here in the past. However, Alpha Xi Delta is not allowed back on campus, they've tried to colonize 3 times and just haven't stuck.

by: Aunt Gin

Tri Sigma has NEVER had a chapter at the University of Alabama. They have a brand new chapter at Auburn, but very very few chapters in the Deep South.
It's not that Alpha Xi Delta is "not allowed back on campus." AXD has been here twice and was treated horribly both times. I doubt they are interested in returning.
Mostly likely Sigma Kappa will return once the fruit basket turnover of construction is done. I understand that the only reason they withdrew last time was because the chapter themselves voted to return their chater.

AXiD applied for consideration along with APhi and DG during the last big extension. After getting passed over, I think they've decided not to try again in the future.

On the other hand, Sigma Kappa didn't apply to present that time, so they may not be interested either, at least not anytime soon. Supporting the new chapter at Indiana is probably their biggest priority right now.

I'm a Sigma Kappa at an SEC school and while I would love to colonize another SEC school, especially at Bama where Greek life is enormous, I know nationals are concerned. It takes soooo much money and fundraising to be able to support a Bama sized chapter and I don't think they want the colonizing class to feel unwanted. If you observe how new chapters are received, people either think they suck and don't give them a chance or it gets really catty if they do remotely well. It's just a big financial risk not necessarily having a welcoming and supportive community who also already have these monster mansions constructed. Just what I've heard.

It really doesnt make sense to try and bring another sorority on campus when SDT is already here. All SDT needs to do is move into a bigger house (one of the swing houses once construction is done) and then participate in formal recruitment. It seems like the other three possible sororities mentioned either aren't interested in joining this campus anytime soon or are too busy making sure their newer chapters are successful. SDT has been on campus for decades so they're already familiar with how our Greek system works and girls on campus are aware of them. It doesnt make sense to spend an absurd amount of money and stress over whether a new chapter can be successful here or not when we already have a NPC sorority here that can be reinvented.

I agree. SDT needs to shape up or ship out honestly. I get that they are cool with how they operate and everything, but it'd be for the greater good of the Panhellenic community (which they technically are members of). You can't have it both ways.
If you're looking for an alternative sorority life, I suggest going ADX, or us getting a chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma, a national service sorority which is actually pretty strong on other campuses. But they'd be outside of Panhel and therefore can do what their governing body thinks is best instead of this one foot in one foot out thing SDT has going on.
SDT needs it's own "recolonization" so to speak. Build a house (or re-do the one they have now), ship in the SDTs from other campuses to support the ladies they already have here and make it happen.

That's not how NPC works, "options." Educate yourself first about NPC policies.
GSS could come here but they would have no impact on the NPC sororities because they're not part of us.
SDT cannot participate in formal recruitment right now because they don't have the numbers. No, they cannot bring in members of other chapters (there aren't that many other chapters close by) to help. They can come and help serve cookies, but they can't take PNMs and talk to them.

Of all the NPC groups not already on campus, only SK and AXD and maybe SSS are big enough to finance the necessary house and provide the initial funding for starting a group. The others are way smaller groups. And it's not just money. There have to be alumnae available to be advisers. Many of these groups have very few alumnae living close enough to Tuscaloosa to be advisers.

No i understand GSS wouldn't be NPC. That's the point. Someone above said "SDT is for girls who want an alternative sorority" But they are an NPC sorority and should be held to the same standards the rest of us are. The idea is have GSS be the new SDT, have SDT get it together and be on the same page as the rest of NPC.
GSS would be for the girls looking for that alternative sorority life and be under whatever governing body they go under. My cousin is a GSS at her school and they have socials with like club sports (i dunno they're a big deal there) and the engineering frats, etc., do tons of volunteering, have big/little, but they have their own recruitment outside of Formal sorority recruitment and are not held to Quota or Total like NPC is.
I think there are options, and I agree it wouldn't be simple or easy, but with the support of the Panhellenic community and their nationals i think SDT could be held to the same standards we all are.

Other people here have said that the three possible sororities that could come here don't want to. Between those three sororities there's little interest, financial opportunity, and potential advisors from them.
The fact of the matter is that in upcoming years UA will need to introduce a new chapter on campus to help deal with the growing amount of interest in sorority life here. Either that or recruitment will become even more cut throat and the 96% match rate will steadily decline, and I know Panhellenic here really doesn't want to see that happen.
At the end of the day I really think SDT should strongly consider participating in formal recruitment once again. They've been on campus for decades, they're known among current Greek members but not too well known, in terms of reputation, so it would be easy for them to rebuild a new name on campus, and as someone said before they have a lot of dedicated alum that want to see them succeed.
I'm sure theres a way for SDT to participate in formal rush even with their low numbers, even if it means they wouldn't be able to speak one on one to the PNMs. If there's a will there's a way, especially here at Bama.
