is summer school a good idea for oos rushee?
by: OOS Rushee
I may be coming to Alabama this fall and am from out of state, but from the South. I don't know a soul. Do many freshmen go to one or both summer sessions in order to meet people in the various chapters before fraternity rush starts? Is this a good idea? Any other suggestions?
Also, I signed up fairly early for housing, about a week after it opened. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I'd say no to summer school. When I came here I literally didn't know anyone but trust me, don't let that scare you. It's an amazing experience coming here and meeting people from across the country, and rush really helps put yourself out there and make even more friends, so you really don't need to come here for summer classes unless you're trying to get ahead academically.
My biggest tip is to add yourself into GroupMe's and be active in them. Also when you come down for Bama Bound (if you end up deciding to come here), meet up with people who are coming down the same time and go out to dinner or something. Also it's only February, most high school seniors haven't committed to a school yet, so in a few months you'll probably hear of a few more people in your area committing to Bama.
Fraternities begin to give bids out in March or so for incoming freshman. And they'll also throw rush parties on the nights of some orientations throughout the summer. You'll also obviously have Fall rush which is somewhat more formal. If you can't make it to any rush parties over the summer, you'll still have fall rush to see the different houses. As of right now I suggest you get on the IFC page and reach out to fraternities that peak your interest. Email them saying you'll be a rushee this upcoming school year and they'll get you in touch to the recruitment chair to let you know about rush events.

in terms of housing, there isn't really a lot of housing close to either university blvd or jefferson for men. besides Burke, Friedman, Paty, and Harris which are closer to university blvd, there's nothing... but all four of those places are literally disgusting. they're traditional style and they're some of the most run down buildings on campus. most people who live in those dorms didn't get to pick where they wanted to live. if you're a fun kid then i'd say Presidential is a good place. if you're legit serious about your studies and want a more quiet/lowkey place then Riverside, plus it's closer to the heart of campus. Ridgecrest is also nice, it's right in front of Pres and they're basically the same.
get on Facebook and start looking for roommates if you already haven't too.
