perspective rushee from the north west; bids?

by: Perspective Rushee

Hello Greeks of Bama!

I am a prospective Bama student this fall from Washington State. I've been doing a TON of research on Bama's Panhellenic, and am very excited about partaking in formal recruitment; but really only if I feel confident I'll be able to get a bid. I'm sure there is a house just for me, but I do wonder about selectivity of in-state vs. out-of-state students, new-row vs. old-row houses, etc.

I'll graduate with a 3.87 GPA, as the student body president of my high school, member of the National Honor Society, a volunteer elementary school math/literary tutor, volunteer middle school volleyball coach, director of a local biking-advocacy non profit, founder of a local alpine ski bus program and freshman-mentoring program, and member of several school clubs. I would say I have more of a west-coast style (appearance/clothing wise), am fairly religious (Roman Catholic, though), and come from a middle-class family. I'm pretty outgoing and articulate, but can also be more soft-spoken. As of now, I will have letters of rec from APhi, DG, DZ and PiDPhi alumnae, and am working to find additional recommenders.

The Greek-system at Bama is one of the main social factors I admire at the school, and I just want to make the most out of my recruitment. Please let me know which houses you think I could (or could not) potentially receive a bid from, which houses you think I should research, etc. Honestly, anything helps!

Thanks y'all and Roll Tide!

Whoops, just realized I used the wrong perspective/(prospective) in my post... that's embarrassing.

First, TMI. This website is frowned upon here. But, you sound like a very involved girl. You will get a house that you will enjoy. Get recs to all the houses so you can have the best rush experience and chill. Enjoy your senior year,

Sorry for being so long-winded! (should change my nickname to no-chill.) I know this may not always be the most dependable source, but I thought I'd reach out for the heck of it. Will for sure find recs for every house if I can, but most likely only one per chapter. (Hope that cuts it.) Thanks!

Your resume is awesome, so you will have an awesome rush. You just need rec letters for as many houses as you can get.Ask your teachers, friends' moms, neighbors, etc if they were in sororities and could write a rec for you. Old row houses take OOS girls, so I think you'll have lots of options.

Glad to hear, thanks. Will find the recs. I wasn't sure if old-row houses were into OOS girls, I had heard otherwise, but thanks for some reassurance!

Get recs, make sure you clean up your social media (no swearing or wild party pics), wear nice (not necessarily expensive) clothes and groom well, and you should have not a whit of trouble. Good luck!

Great advice, thank you!! My social media is pretty boring... will active members actually be checking it out? My IG looks like I only hang out with my family...

Contact your local alumnae panhellenic group--there's probably one in Seattle?-- and ask them for help with recs. They should be able to help you out. Good luck!

I'll share my personal experience, take it for what it's worth.

I came from a non-southern out of state, with recommendations true family and friends to various houses, none of the recommendations were from Alabama alumnae. It definitely seems like the recommendations helped, as I was carried by the top houses where I had them and drop by the ones where I did not.

At pref I had two, top old row houses and one of the better new row houses. I chose and got a bid from the new row house, and love it there! It was a better fit for me.

One of my close friends who I met here, and is a non-southern out of state girl, joined one of the old row houses I had a bid from and I have become friends with many of her other friends in that house. Her group in that house is primarily out of state and they spend a lot of time with a group from my new row house.

We all like our houses

I guess my point is to focus on where you fit best, and it will all work out. Coming from out of state, particularly a non-southern state, you may find that you bond better With similar girls, whether in an old house or new.
