honest assessment for incoming

by: Fresh

As an OOS incoming freshmen, and pnm I wish I got this advice....

Rushing is stressful, but in the end it works out. With rare exception, if you rush, you will get a bid.

Some houses are more competitive, but that doesn't mean they are a fit for you. Focus on what may work for you. It's okay to strive for "a high ranked house" , but really only if it matches who YOU are. And if you don't get your top pick, all houses are great and offer a great sisterhood and what you put into it.

Focus on a fit.

Here my summary:

AXO. - Highly desired with very broad appeal. Hard to get a bid - requires a mix of grades, grace, and a certain kind of self awareness. That being said, not necessarily everyone's favorite/first choice, as some houses are more "specialized" and target types as described below. While AXO has a large component of in state girls from "good areas and backgrounds" they will consider others with similar resumes. But a hard bid.

KD (connections), KKG (party), XO ( chill) are desired by and focused on Alabama and adjacent state girls, from desired areas with connections. Girls that likely already know a member. KKG is probably most open to others, but will require similar credentials.

Phi Mu (looks/ pageant), AGD (Christian) and DDD (various) represent an old row, broader, southern appeal.

ZTA (looks) PiPhi (chill) and APhi (looks) tend to focus on the non southern - west coast, New York, and other out of state girls. A different vibe.

This thread makes it sound like it'd you like a house with girls like you, rush goes pretty easy.

But do I need letters of recommendation? For every house? When should I start? There is general form that the Bama Panhellenic sight says is used by all houses. Is that all I need, to do?
Or should I not do that?

by: Get your recs

Getting recs can be a long process. Get your packets ready now and start locating women to write your recs ( your mom's fb friends, your teachers, your parents co- workers) and call/ email/ fb message any alumnae groups in the area to fill in the rest. Mail them your packets ( sometimes the alumna wants to meet for coffee so bring it in person) and put in a thank you card! Some of these recs take an hour to write so thanking them for their time is the right thing to do. The reason getting recs are important is that there are over 2400 girls going through. Every nationals require one rec for every girl extended a bid. If you don't already have a rec for that house that means the house has to either scramble to get you a rec or drop you for a girl that does. It just improves your chances. You have six months to get them in.

YES, you need recs for every house if you can possibly get them. Recs will give each house a 'preview" of you. The more familiar they are with you and your name and background, the better your party will go, and the more likely they are to vote for you to return.
If you can't get a rec for a few houses, don't worry, but do at least try to make the effort.

Houses do make mistakes in overlooking and dropping girls. Each rush some houses, either through luck or skill, seem to do better at getting the right pnms

Don't want to call out any specific house, but there was a pnm in my rho chi, who eventually got a bid from a top house - the whole package, grades, activities, sweet girl, etc. She had an interest in a mid rank house because of a family connection, someone sent a rec for her, they were OOS focused, and knowing her and the house it seems they should have made an effort to try to get her.

They dropped her first round.

Can't say how it would have turned out, but I wanted to note houses make mistakes along the way.

So, just cause you are dropped, doesn't mean it's "you"

This post is useful in explaining why it can be more difficult to get a bid to certain houses but just remember to get recs for each house, keep your grades up and your social media clean and try to enjoy rush!\n\n\n\n\n

From an alumnae and adviser perspective, every chapter at every school would like to have a majority of in-state girls.
These girls are more likely to marry hometown boys, or at least boys from their own state, and get jobs and settle down in state.
Now....who is going to serve as an advisor for the chapter at Alabama...or Auburn, UAB, Montevallo, USA, UWA, UNA, UAH, Jacksonville State, AUM, Huntington? Alumnae who are just down the road a little.
Who is going to respond to an appeal for donations when the heating and air conditioning system has to be replaced? When the living and dining areas need to be redecorated? Alumnae who are close enough to visit.

That's why chapters would like to pledge more Alabama girls. Not because they're better, or prettier, or more snooty...it's because they're going to be there in the future.

Seems then that you better start keeping up with what is going on with the University administration, that is doing everything they can to attract more OOS students.

Also, disagree with you. There are plenty oddments schools that have traditionally attracted out if state students with very large endowments.

School ties are strong and I believe the alumnae will be there, wherever that ultimately locate. \n\n\n\n\n

The majority of students and Greek life students are from out of state. The numbers get higher every year. An all "Alabama" house or all "Southern" house is wishful thinking. Though, there are some that won't give up, it will eventually bite them in the butt. Alabama alumni encompass the entire USA contrary to what folks want to believe. Roll Tide from OOS. Still don't believe me, read the fact book or hold on to your traditional beliefs. UofA is on a different path now. Dig in or get with the program.
