honest assessment for incoming

by: Fresh

As an OOS incoming freshmen, and pnm I wish I got this advice....

Rushing is stressful, but in the end it works out. With rare exception, if you rush, you will get a bid.

Some houses are more competitive, but that doesn't mean they are a fit for you. Focus on what may work for you. It's okay to strive for "a high ranked house" , but really only if it matches who YOU are. And if you don't get your top pick, all houses are great and offer a great sisterhood and what you put into it.

Focus on a fit.

Here my summary:

AXO. - Highly desired with very broad appeal. Hard to get a bid - requires a mix of grades, grace, and a certain kind of self awareness. That being said, not necessarily everyone's favorite/first choice, as some houses are more "specialized" and target types as described below. While AXO has a large component of in state girls from "good areas and backgrounds" they will consider others with similar resumes. But a hard bid.

KD (connections), KKG (party), XO ( chill) are desired by and focused on Alabama and adjacent state girls, from desired areas with connections. Girls that likely already know a member. KKG is probably most open to others, but will require similar credentials.

Phi Mu (looks/ pageant), AGD (Christian) and DDD (various) represent an old row, broader, southern appeal.

ZTA (looks) PiPhi (chill) and APhi (looks) tend to focus on the non southern - west coast, New York, and other out of state girls. A different vibe.

ADP, AOP, and KAT have high grade averages and attract a mix of girls.

DG and DZ a friendly mix of girls that are close and good sisterhoods.

GPHiB - an independent minded sisterhood. Beautiful house.

Panlove. All Bama houses are great.

Have tried to give a feel of each houses vibe. Hope this helps some people.

Yes some houses are more competitive/ hard to get a bid. But that doesn't mean they are a good fit for you.

Strive for what has most appeal, but no need to feel bad about any house!!!!

Rush is stressful but it works.

Thanks @ good news. Hope it helps some others too

I came to Bama because I fell in love with the campus, the friendliness and the school after several visits.

But it was still a tough decision to leave my "home state" and the familiarity of old friends. I maintain those connections, stay in touch and visit, but am glad that I am exploring new friendships and expanding my horizons.

Frankly, I feel like I have the best of both worlds with friends old and new.

I am thankful I had a great rush and was provided good options, both old and new row. I pref'd and "got" my first pick - a "new row" house. While it's not ranked as a "top tier" old row, house - it really works for me.

I understand the desire to be with old high school friends and connections, and could have made that choice if I had chosen from several universities where the bulk of my high school clasmates went. But given that i did not make the choice to say in my home state, was looking for others who shared that sense of adventure.

Trying to work my way into a strong network of girls with a long history, didn't make sense to me. But I certainly understand the pull for those that made the chioce and why they are ranked "top" - as this is Bama. Frankly, wouldn't want that to change.

But my choices works for me and I can say the same for my sisters.

Hope we all can take pride in our choices.

Bama has many great girls, friends (from different houses), sisters and sisterhoods.

Panlove.

I think in State girls and girls who already know people in houses CAN have a more stressful rush

Particularly, if they get dropped from houses where they thought they hadn't friends or connections.

If it's poor grades, they might feel there is a reason

But if not it can seem personal. That can be rough.

KD, KKG, AXO and XO with a high percentage of in state girls can cause some anxiery because there is that pressure for some to be (or stay) connected to these "friends".

Oops....meant to say "in houses where they thought they HAD friends....".

It can feel personal if they are dropped.

@In State....

Pretty interesting fact. I never thought about the stresses/anxiety for in-state girls. Being from the north, I felt like in-state girls had all the advantages but I can see how it's tough after reading your thoughtful post. And here I thought it was hard for me knowing no one, having no connections, etc. I guess any way you slice it, rushing is stressful!

actually in state make a good pt. if you are from Alabama, you are kind of pigeonholed by your hs rep, so in a way, oos is easier. I personally love my hs friends but glad we aren't all at the same two schools like it seems here, either UA or Au.
