lets talk about nationals

by: :)

Since the majority of stuff on this site is only based on chapters of each sorority, lets talk about the nationals of them.

For all you PNMs on this site, something you should all take into serious consideration when rushing is how strong a chapters nationals are. Of course, you all want a sorority that is "considered good" at the school you're attending, but you should deeply look into the nationals of the sororities, especially if you're rushing because you want a sorority that will provide you with "strong connections in the future" that many of us say we want.
Examples:
Chi Omega is a upper middle tier house here and has extremely strong nationals and a variety of alums in many different fields, including Harper Lee.
Kappa Alpha Theta is a bottom tier house here , however, they're the first sorority ever founded and also have exceptional nationals (they have a very extensive list of alums some of which Laura Bush and Tory Burch).
Phi Mu is arguably the top house here, however it is notably a southern sorority, so alums of high standing may be hard to find; many notable alumni are in the entertainment industry if that means anything to you.
Delta Zeta is the bottom house here, and they don't have strong nationals. They have a few notable alums, but there are definitely better sororities that will provide you more and better future connections.

Those were just some examples of some sororities and their strength of their nationals/notable alums. Every sorority has notable alums, however, just be advised that not every sorority has nationals that have a strong influence.

Just my opinion but if you are joining a sorority to get ahead in business, there are much better ways. Harper Lee is not going to help you get a novel published and some random Phi Mu in the "entertainment industry" isn't going to help get you a job on Broadway. You will need to work hard, make excellent grades, impress your professors, do graduate work, work extensively on making and keeping connections, interning, etc. to succeed in your career. You may be able to have a nice conversation if someone sees you're in their college sorority on your resume. However, you also my lose the chance at a job because the person looking at your resume hates greeks. For that reason, most people don't list greek affiliation on their resume. My advice is to look at this as a social group and choose some girls you want as your lifelong friends. Don't choose people you think you can use to get ahead.

What?? A lot of people join sororities because of the future connections they'll get in the business world. A lot of people get privileges and advantages from being Greek affiliated. If you join a notable sorority/fraternity you do get things more easily than GDIs. Of course you need to work hard and be outgoing, however its a known fact that Greek affiliates are more likely to get a job over a GDI.
Of course you shouldn't just use a sorority for that reason though. Sororities are social groups that have evolved into something that you can use to your advantage in your future life. However, joining a sorority IS a life long commitment. To PNMs, IF you find yourself in a situation where you need to choose between a few sororities at the end of rush and you feel good with all of them, look into their national standing.

No, it is NOT "a known fact that Greek affiliates are more likely to get a job over a GDI." Not at all. It can count against you very easily when you are after a job. Listing your Greek affiliation on a resume, unless you personally know how the hiring manager feels about Greeks, or your own affiliation, is like playing Russion Roulette with your prospects. If you think it's "a known fact" then please site your sources.

The person hiring you could have all of the negative opinions of Greek life...you bought your friends, you're a snob, and partied your whole time in college. Plus, if you look at the % of students at any campus that are Greek, and include all of the schools that aren't Greek at all, you have a better chance that the connections you eventually have after college aren't Greek. They won't care that you were, either, unless you had a significant leadership position.

Or, like a recent alum of my sorority, the person who hires you could have a biological sister who is an alum of your chapter. Those are the connections we refer to, and it's a lot more common than some people might think.

Connections like that (where you know someone who knows someone) are the best and most common. The fake reason for being in a sorority is that some 50 year old woman in Los Angeles is going to give you a job because you have XYZ sorority on your resume. First, it's like you wouldn't get even an interview since in business school they tell you NOT to put it on your resume because of general marketplace hatred of greeks. Second, people out of school do not care that you are a member of a sorority halfway across the country. Even if it's their chapter they don't care.

Any hiring manager worth their salt puts their personal beliefs aside and will hire you if you are the best or most qualified candidate. Leaving your affilitation off only serves to hurt you in that if you get the job under someone who is anti-greek, you may very well end up hating the job because you dont get along with your coworkers. I mean, why would you want to work for someone hates you for something so trivial? Be yourself in your interviews. If that includes your greek experience, you shouldnt hide it

If you want to talk nationals, AGD has no claim to fame on a national level.

If you want to know how connected you might be after graduation, look at where a sorority has alumni chapters across the country. These are the people who could possibly help you get your foot in the door somewhere, but you have to make an effort like @nationals said. Being in a sorority doesn't give you some sort of magic pass from hard work. When an interviewer asks your strengths, you aren't going to mention that you're in Tory Burch's sorority! Famous alumni are nothing more than fun trivia among your friends.

These posts are silly. Yes...a lasting bond is formed by fellow members of one's sorority or fraternity and these bonds can exist in your professional life too but to think it gives you a huge advantage is just not correct. It's designed to round out a college experience but by no means should pnms think it defines you as a person and offers you huge opportunities post graduation.
