old vs new row

by: Martha

This is 2016 and I hate to tell you, NO ONE cares whether you are old or new row. The only ones who seem to care are the ones who think they have superiority because of the location of their chapter house. Outside of your members NO ONE else cares!! Maybe your Daddy or Mama like to tell their friends, but those people don't care either!

Then why do you feel the need to post this?

To clarify that people other than yourself really don't care! Please quit trying to feel superior and so pretentious based on the location of your chapter house! It's comical because no one cares!!

How nice of a Zeta or Alpha Phi to join us. If it means something to someone, then let it be. If it doesn't mean something to you, then let that be too.

If you're going to move back up to Jersey after you graduate, then no, it probably won't mean anything. But if you're planning on staying in the south after graduation, it could benefit you to be old row as far as connections for jobs.

So let it go, sweetie. Let it go.

If you have to rely on the location of your chapter house to get a job in the real world...you're in for a surprise. We live in s global society and the days of what Greek house you were in and the location is so 1960ish.
If your GPA, major, internships, co-ops, etc... can't get you an interview and you have to rely on your affiliation, I feel sorry for you. What a waste of an education and why did you bother going to college in the first place?!
You may stay in Alabama, but that doesn't mean the company is from Alabama or corporate offices are latex there.

I live and work in Atlanta. Loved my sorority life. But nobody gives a rat's ass about Greek affiliation in the working world, much less what you were at Bama. Love your house but don't make it more than it is.

Oh honey, your naivety astounds me!! Do you plan to wear your letters emblazoned across your chest to your interview? Will your resume have your Greek affiliation followed by "Old Row"? How else will they know give you a keg up over all the other candidates?
Bless your sweet little heart, you have a lot to learn about the real world. You're going to have a rude awakening that no ine gives a rats ass where you lived at Bama! In fact they probably won't be impressed that you went to Alabama since they admit just about anyone who applies!

Any connection that Greek affiliation offers to get someone to look twice at your resume is not limited to so-called old row. Every single house has alumni out there. Certain houses don't have a monopoly on alumni in the south. Truth.

Connections you make help you get an advantage in internships, jobs, etc. You can make connections by making friends in other houses, student government, organizations related to your major, etc. Being in an old row sorority will not get you a job at a prestigious law firm in Bham. But a stellar law school record and an acquaintance in a law firm could get you an interview. It doesn't have to be a sister -- it could be a former classmate who wasn't even greek.

Just realize that you need to expand your circle, regardless what house you're in.

This is a really good thread, lots of truth here. The more connections you have the better, doesn't have to be old row, but you need the grades, internships and qualifications more than anything.
