How badly does not having any recommendation letters for any sororities effect your chances of getting a bid?.... And how much does it effect you if you're also a Sophomore with no recommendations?

Do you really need two?

affects them A LOT - especially if you are a sophomore because that is already making rush more difficult. I would try to get 2-3 for each just because if one person says they will and forgets, you are still covered.

Do you need 2 or 3 for each chapter? Or just in general? And how do you go about getting them? I'm from the west coast and many schools here don't have some of these chapters. So I don't really have anyone to ask for a rec from.

Does it make it hard to get a bid in general, or just a bid from the house I wanted/most people want?

You need at least one for EVERY chapter. The recs come from alums not active members so ask teachers, your parents' friends, your friends' parents.

You know people - you just don't know that you do until you ask. Most people who were involved in Greek life, know other people who were also. So when you ask - also ask if they know anyone in any of the other chapters.

Also, these are NATIONAL groups, they have members everywhere.

Contact your local Panhellenic for assistance in your city or closest big city.

Also ask around more to you moms friends to pass the word around you are looking for assistance.

Please get at least one rec for every sorority. Be available to meet for coffee with your rec writer so they can get to know you.

Send thank you notes please

Google "Alumnae Panhellenic (closest big city to you)" and email someone there and explain that you're at Alabama, that you need recs, and that you would appreciate their help. Have a resume and a picture ready to send via email. You have a year. There is no excuse not to have them. Ask every adult you can think of. You'd be surprised to find out who was in a sorority. You will be lucky to get a bid to any house at Alabama, especially as a sophomore, so don't just focus on one or two. Definitely send thank you notes and be gracious.

I'm in an old row house and had possibly one, but most likely no recommendations and I was fine, so I don't know how much recs actually matter

How do you not know how many recs you had? Seems like something you either have or don't have.

Hello,

This is false. Girls will convince you its MANDATORY to have recommendations. Super false. I'm out of state, I knew nobody coming in, I didn't have one recommendation, and didn't get dropped from any houses till Sisterhood, oh and by the way, I got dropped from one house. Girls will convince you, you need recs, its a lie. You need recs if you're bad at talking to people, have a terrible GPA, and weren't involved. If you aren't any of those things, you'll do fine. I will fill you in though, Kappa Delta and Tri Delt require at least two rec letters, but if they really like you, they'll make an acception.

By the way,

I'm a sophomore. Literally don't believe these girls. I knew plenty of girls that were legacies and had recs for every house and got dropped. Its bs. The girls typically pick before rush based on your application.

BamaSororityGirl,
Did you rush as a sophomore or did you rush as a freshman? I'm really worried about my chances as a sophomore!

Dear No Recs,
Congrats on your success. I am happy you have found your people!
You made it a lot harder for us during recruitment by not providing recs. Just keep this in mind.

Dear PNMs with Recs,
Thank you for working hard to show us you are interested in us! We are very excited to meet you as now we know a little about you!

There isn't a single chapter of sororities here in some other states so it's a little bit hard to get recs for those if the nearest chapter is three or four states away

Just because there aren't college chapters of a certain sorority in your state doesn't mean there aren't alums of that sorority in your state. You just need to do a little research.
