theta

by: FRESHMAN

What should I do? During rush, on philanthropy day I was only left with theta, so I did't have any options when it came to receiving a bid from one house over another. During rush I never felt a connection with any of the girls who spoke to me but I decided to pledge just to give it a try. About a month in, I still feel like I haven't really connected with any of the girls. Since theta is a bottom house, cliques between the "better" girls in the house are evident and it's weird to see such a mix of girls. I'm going to wait until next weekend for big/little reveal and see if anything gets better, but overall I'm pretty torn as to whether or not I should stay with theta. I love the Greek life atmosphere and how Greeks are pushed to be more outgoing (academically, socially, etc.) so I definitely feel that Greek life is for me, but I just don't feel like theta is the one. Also, I've heard a lot about how theta is in debt and there's a possibility their chapter here at UA will be removed. I know this isn't the best place to ask for advice but a lot of people on here give blunt and honest answers, so what do y'all think I should do? I wouldn't mind dropping before initiation and rushing again next fall, but, since all houses speak to each other, do you think having dropped the year prior would hurt my chances? Do y'all think theta is a bad/"bottom" house? (P.S. during rush I had a 3.5 gpa, was somewhat involved in high school, and not a legacy of any house, and I'm not a hoe).

It will be hard for you to get a bid from any house if you drop out now and re-rush. It's harder as a sophomore and since you had good grades there isn't much that can change over a year. If houses dropped you this year they'll probably drop you next year too. My suggestion is to throw yourself into Theta and make a difference there. If you see cliques, be friends with everyone. Look for a leadership role. Maybe do programming and get a presentation on cliques and how to overcome that. Don't expect things to be perfect in any org without any effort on your part. The fact that you distinguish between "better girls" and weird girls says to me that you might even inadvertently be part of the problem. Go solve it. Don't run away.

Agree, there are some good points here. Go for leadership opportunities. Committee heads first, then Panhellenic or board offices. Also look for committees with members who are well respected and join those committees. Learn how to make culture changes then work to improve your chapter.

Meanwhile, I can tell you Theta is still a strong chapter and is not going anywhere or being removed. Those kind of rumors should be addressed with your leadership. Be the one to build a better rep. The girls are worth it.

Rerush I know girls who dropped their houses and ended up in KD, ADP, and Alpha Phi. You'll be fine just be honest when you rerush.

You're far better off in Theta than in Alpha Phi. Idk about KD and ADP, but Alpha Phi is not a step up. I'd say stay where you are. Theta is well respected except in Alabama which is more than I can say for KD, ADP, or especially AP.

Freshman, Theta is not in debt and they are DEFINITELY NOT about to lose their chapter. That's absolutely ridiculous. They just renovated their house in 2011--only 5 years ago--before pledge classes got to be 120+, and that's why they aren't in line for a new house right. You can't expect them to drop millions of dollars on a renovation and then only 5 years later, drop another $10 mil on a new house. That's just not how it works for most people realistically. Besides, a new house is not be all and end all of being in a sorority. Why not try to make friends instead of judging all the girls in your pledge class that you feel like are not on the same level as you? Maybe you're the one with the problem here. There are a lot of things I could reply to this because it's so ridiculous and sad, but I'm not going to waste any more of my time with this.
