rumors about new sororities and theta.

by: TS

I've heard from a few people that because thetas in debt and their nationals doesn't do anything to help them, the university might get their charter pulled. Also heard that it's going to happen within the next 2 years if theta doesn't start building quick because both sigma kappa and trisig want to colonize on campus and both nationals have offered up the money to build houses with the standard of the other new large mansions on the row, without debt.

I understand that Theta has a national house corporation that chapters can decide to join or not. If a chapter joins, they have to turn over complete control to the national board. Dunno if the Bama chapter has joined their national house corp or not, but maybe they are doing all they can to keep it local before they have to have nationals take it over? (Not a Theta so that's all I know.)

None of this has been discussed in the theta house at all. If sigma kappa and tri sigma want to be on campus that's great, but we do not have to leave for that to happen.

Just to be a little clearer: No national house corporation, of any sorority, has millions of dollars to just hand to chapters like 'here ya go, build your mansion.' The chapter alumnae leadership must save some money, fundraise a good portion, and put a financial plan in place for the chapter to take on their share with increased dues/housing fees. Then nationals can help secure financing - which means a loan, meaning some amount of debt. Every house has to do it this way. Rumors of the university wanting to have a charter pulled are absolutely false and that's not gonna happen. So no, Theta is not leaving Bama, and no, two new sororities, IF they come on, are not having a mansion handed to them debt free. And if you are a Theta you have every right to ask your chapter leadership what the deal is with your housing situation. BUT, if you are thinking of dropping over your house, you joined your sorority for the wrong reason - love your sisters, get involved in campus life, go to football games and parties, date cute boys, make good grades - you don't need a bigger house to have all those things.

What OP said makes sense though. It is to my understanding that Theta is not part of their house corp and their alumni refuse to finance their new house because Theta refused to join the machine a year or two ago. UA is not loaning Theta anymore money until they pay off their existing loan. So essentially their in a serious bind. The amount of women joining sororities continues to increase and UA does want another house to join, BUT won't bring them in until everyone finishes rebuilding. I wouldn't be surprised if they do tell Theta to rebuild or leave.

I have also heard that because they are no the only sorority other than sdt/adx that aren't machine, the alumni are even more upset have mostly stopped being active in it. Basically not even thetas own alumni will help them stay relevant. If they don't get into a swing house or at least have a rendering by next year, their recruitment will be worse than ever, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave out a ton of snap bids.

The university can't just order a GLO to leave campus for non-disciplinary reasons.

That said, it's sad if their alums are pressuring them to affiliate when they don't want to on principle. (The chapter took a stand and left The Machine of their own accord in the early '90s during the Minda Riley mess that got the SGA shut down for four years.)

These are scare tactics spread by Machine to make it seem like they can run off a chapter as they please. No alumnae group would rather see the death of a chapter over loyalty to the machine. Ridiculous, can you imagine? Their nationals wouldn't let that happen either. The machine would like everyone to think they have that much power but they don't. And the university is not going to try to have a charter pulled over a house payment - at worst they would kick them out of their house if they were severely delinquent, but that is not the case at all, AND that scenario would not be in Bama's best interest or anyone else's. UA has a lot of bigger fish to fry than to pick on a sorority that needs a new house. Rumors fly when no one who's really in the know comes forward with the truth. Seems like Theta needs some transparency here because the made up rumors are most often worse than the truth with some bad news.

Like Theta's national board cares about the machine. It means nothing anywhere else.

Theta has been a non-machine house by choice for the majority of the time the machine has included sororities. It is a point of pride for Theta alums that its members aren't told who to vote for, not a reason for withholding funds. The reality is Theta completed a substantial expansion and renovation the year before the big building trend began. It isn't clear why the University let that happen, but it did. Theta also wants to keep its lot. That means that it needed AOPI to be ready to renovate too because the plan for the Theta and AOPI houses involves splitting the Temple Tutwiler, AOPI and Theta lots into two lots. Right now there aren't any swing houses open and Pi Phi is in the German house. Spending another year in the perfectly fine Theta house is far preferable to having no facilty at all for at least a year. Those are the real reasons Theta is the last to rebuild.

You should explain that to the chapter so they won't be so worried.

Theta was the only house to stand in solidarity with the black students who marched on sorority row to protest the KD/Sigma Chi "Who Rides the Bus?" blackface mixer, which happened around the same time that Minda Riley got beaten up by The Machine.

Great post. I am a theta fan. Love what they stand for. This building situation, however, is really hurting them.

Such little faith. Someone has to go last. Doesn't mean anything.

Really, oh ye of little faith is right. Not every chapter can build at the same time. They will do what's best for Theta on a timeline that works for them. And the major renovation they did is a good reason they are last.

Alumnae don't just fork over millions. There is a campaign to raise money to help down payments for loans. Yearly dues are what pay off the loans eventually -- not alumnae.

Too privileged. Be grateful.
