am i good enough?

by: PNM 20

Hey y'all, so I'm really happy to have 7 houses today, and I even got some top choices too! I'm a little concerned though because I don't have any personal connections to the houses as I am OOS and on the periphery of what is considered the South. I was raised in a good family, I have manners (attending an etiquette school would have been way weird for my milieu though), pretty enough, but I think what sets me apart are my academic achievements and involvement with student orgs. My top choices are old row houses that are known for grades and involvement, so I definitely was impressed by that, but reading these boards and hearing girls in Tut talking, it seems like the only OOS that houses that AXO and DDD take are 1) have personal connections 2) Super wealthy Greenwich, CT and Newbort Beach, CA girls 3) have some super cool life story like they're from abroad or have a famous family. I am none of those things, but I do have a social media presence in a niche hobby of mine.
My concern is that I like them a lot, but if they're not going to pref me, I'd rather put some other houses on top of my list to look at during pref. Thanks for the future advice!

You're not in control of who prefs you. You can put them at the top of your list but if you're not on the top of theirs you'll be dropped. Be open to everyone.

Would you please tell me how pref works? When I list my preferences, do I rank my first choice #1, etc.? What if I would be really happy with any of the three houses that I pref? I actually have about 5 houses on my list that I'd be delighted to be a member of! Thank you for your help!

Just rank in order you want them. They don't know what you rank and where you rank does not impact the process. Their nvite lists will determine. You don't need to try to game anything.

Ok, after sisterhood, you'll rank your top 3 choices as 1. Then 2 (wouldn't really mind going back), 3, 4, 5, 6 (if you have 8 houses left...would rather not go back). You may get your top 3, you may get some of your top 3 and some others, etc. Then, AFTER pref, yes, rank according to your preferences. Put your favorite house as 1, then the others as 2 and 3 (if you have 3 houses for pref).

you still do not have control unless you know (and you can't) that you top three will invite you to pref. Keep werking. Don't assume anything.

Thank you for this information. AFTER pref, if my number 1 doesn't select me, then do I end up with no bid? I would be really happy with any of the houses I visited during sisterhood (8 total). I appreciate your help with this!

@A, no problem, girl! I know this whole process can be really confusing and overwhelming. Ok, so after Pref, you will rank 1, 2,3 in preferential order. If you are on your #1's first bid list, that's an automatic match, and you'll receive a bid to your #1. If you don't match with your number 1, the computer will check to see if you are on your number 2's first bid list, and if you are, you'll receive a bid to your #2. If not, the computer will then see if you are on your number 3's first bid list, and if you are, you'll receive a bid to your #3. If you aren't on the first bid list for any of your 3, you will be added as a quota addition (most of the time to your first choice), as long as you maximized your options. No one will know, including you, if you are a QA or if you were regularly matched, so don't worry about that. The most important thing is to maximize your options and list every house you attend for pref on your card. If you do this, you are pretty much guarenteed a bid from one of your three. You have such a positive attitude, and I'm sure you'll end up very happy on Bid Day! Good luck!

Dear RTR -- you are an angel! Thank you so much for answering my questions. I have really enjoyed this process and have met many great people. So glad I chose Bama! Roll Tide!

The big thing to remember is to qualify for quota additions and receive a guarantee bid, you MUST rank all the sororities that you attended a preference party at. If you leave any house off your ranking and aren't on the first bid list of either house you do rank, then you will not receive any bid.

Also, I want to correct something above. It is very possible that you will end up in your second or lowest ranked houses if you end up being a quota addition. Although in a perfect world your end up with your first choice, if any of those choices hasn't made quota yet or has a significantly smaller number of quota additions at that point, you will go to the house that "needs" you the most. The computer program works at both placing PNMs as well as balancing new member classes at the same time. So be sure you're willing to accept a bid from any of the sororities you list.

Put your 3 favorite houses down for Pref. Don't worry about Old vs New Row, being OOS but not a "super star" (that's subjective anyway) PNM, or anything else. Really look at the sisterhood in the 7 houses you have left. Do the sisters seem genuinely close? Do they act like they're having fun together? If you mention a certain topic/interest that's unique about you, do they connect with that or find a sister that they know will connect with that? Do they seem excited to be talking to you? These are the most important things. After visiting all 7 houses, rank your top 3 as 1 and then the others as 2,3,4,5. If one or more of your top 3 doesn't/don't invite you back, and another/other houses do, you'll get to visit them again for pref anyway. Follow your heart, keep an open mind, and let the chips fall where they may. Good luck!

I went to AXO and XO for sisterhood as well and I also like them but also OOS. How are OOS girls treated at these sororities?

Honestly they do fine. There is a divide that happens half way through first semester when the Bama girls basically just stay in their high school and hometown friend groups and sort of pull away from the mainstream of the house. Happens more n xo than Axo. This s a thing with oos in old row. They end up with the Alabama girls that are not really great inclusive sisters.

Kinda figures Ddd kappa and KD-- would be the slowest to tune into how to recruit oos. They ate fighting internally over keeping actives friends from home versus oos pnms with awesome packages. Predict the do mixed bag then the house gets split even more.

That's why some newer chapters are getting significantly better. They are pledging fantastic OOS girls who the old row houses are rejecting for no other reason than they aren't from Alabama or the south. The tide is starting to turn. (ha ha see what I did there?)
