rec letters
by: Hopeful17I am hoping to rush next year. I am coming from the North and don't have many connections to individuals in Greek life. The almost 3k Rush Candidates this year along with my lack of connections is daunting. I've read on here to reach out to everyone you know and I plan to do that;however, I am positive I will have trouble securing Rec letters from most of the sororities. I'm also reading that some girls have two or three Rec's from the same house. Ugh! Advice given on various sites says to contact the chapter and have them help you, but I wonder if this is frowned upon. Yes. I really am asking this early because I want to work on securing Rec's so I am not scrambling at the last minute. I also read about some Open Houses in the Spring but those threads seemed a few years old. Do the houses still do this? I really would like to keep an open mind regarding all the houses. I am looking for the friendship aspect, but also for the philanthropy and leadership I am reading about on all the chapter websites. I am coming for a campus tour but I know connections won't be made then. Anyone willing to give me the real deal? Lol! I know it's super competitive so just looking to have the best experience. Thanks so much!

Contact your local panhellenic groups and alumnae chapters of the sororities and tell them you need help with getting recs. You will be surprised how many contacts are all around you that you don't even know of. Your recs don't have to come from Alabama if that's all you can do.

Thank you so much for the replies. Teachers are a great suggestion!! Also, when you say to contact my local Pan groups, are you referring to the local chapters at specific colleges/universities surrounding me? Or should there be a group of alumnae from all pan sororities near me that form a group? Sorry for my ignorance. And again thank YOU!

Letters can be from an alumna of ANY chapter - ie, someone who was a Kappa at Yale or an AGD at Syracuse can write your Bama rec.
Since you suspect it may be difficult, start lining up your rec writers now and the send them your packet with resume/ pics/ transcripts next spring.
Thought starters:
Neighbors
Teachers
Women from church or other community organizations
Your mom and grandmas' friends
Aunts, cousins, etc
Your friends' moms and grandmas
If all else fails, post on Facebook that you are going through rush at Bama and in need of a rec to the following chapters. Tag your mom & other female relatives so their friends see it, too.
If you absolutely cannot find someone, I'd reach out to the alumnae group nearest you- ie, the Boston Tri-Delta Alumnae Group- and ask if someone will be willing to meet you & write a rec. We have city Panhellenic groups in the South but I don't know if they are common in the North. You may have better luck reaching out to the alumnae groups.
Good luck!
