left out

by: Not southern

Would I feel left out/less connected to my sisters if I pledged a house that's predominantly southern? I'm from the southwest so I'm not totally unaccustomed to southern ideas and values but still!!

Not at all. You can be very happy in a Southern house.

Your nickname being "not southern" and you being from the southwest suggests to me that you have a better chance of a good fit in a new row house. Not that oos not southern can't get lucky and actually make good friends in an old row house, but the sad reality is most in state girls are not too interested in branching out and they are mostly in old row houses. But they are good marketers and could sell you in recruitment but beware the wolf in sheep clothing.

Which southern houses tend to be more welcoming to oos girls?

New row is way more welcoming and diverse of thought. Opportunities will be endless.

Do you see yourself living and having an amazing career in Alabama at you graduate? That's the southern mind set.

No but I do intend on staying in the south (Atlanta or NOLA)

I'm from the south in a new row house with more OOS girls and I feel left out a lot. It goes both ways

What about Southern cities but those that are larger with more diverse populations? Like Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Nashville, Charlotte, etc.?

I'm from Houston. It's diverse. You will need to have a more open mind here. We do have southern manners and are very friendly. We welcome new/different people more like new row. I do have 2 dear friends from Houston in old row.

I'm also from a big southern city. What do you mean by "more open mind?" I thought that people in big cities were supposed to be more open-minded and those from smaller southern towns were close minded.

I'm also from Houston and while I'd say we have some Southern culture, it's nothing like Alabama/Mississippi intense. Would I still feel out of place in an Alabama-centered sorority?

Even though Kappa and Phi Mu are old row they take TONS of oos girls. Alpha Chi, Tri Delt, and Alpha Gam are very much in state. KD and Chi O take a few oos.

Ik a phi mu from my hometown at Bama and she told my friend that she feels less connected to her sisters than the girls who are already from the south... But she's also not very girly or friendly and outgoing

The attitude on old row is they may "take a few oos" as the response above indicates. If you can handle being sort of the outsider, go for it. Good luck. but main thing s not to worry and make your own decision based on your recruitment and just follow your heart.

All houses have a lot of OOS girls now. That said, the houses do more "choosing" than you do during rush so if you won't fit into a more southern house, it's unlikely you'd be invited back there past the first or second round.

You'll end up where you are supposed to. Don't stress!
