rushing as an upperclassman?

by: PNM

I'm thinking about rushing this fall and I was wondering if y'all think being an upperclassman will affect my chances? Also, what's a good cutoff for recommended GPA? I know the Panhellenic website says 3.0 so If I have anything over that should I be pretty safe GPA wise?

I see no issue with upperclassmen rushing! I know that the recommended GPA is 3.0, but having a higher GPA, maybe 3.3-3.4 and higher will give you your best chance. Also, being involved in organizations on campus will definitely help you out, so be sure to mention any involvement (or leadership positions) when you go through rush! There is a separate quota for upperclassmen than incoming freshmen for each house, but do keep in mind there are a quite a few upperclassmen that are also rushing and some houses will only take a few. I wish you the best of luck during rush!

Thank you, this helps a lot! Is there any other advice you would give for rush?

No problem! Something else I've thought about is that you're going to asked a lot of the same questions in every house, so it could help to talk about something that could make you stand out from other PNMs. It's likely that you will be asked about why you would like to be in a sorority/why you decided to rush as an upperclassman, so take the summer to reflect on why you chose to wait or what has inspired you to join. Be genuine with your answers! If you love the idea of having sisters that will always have your back, talk about how you would love to be a person to go to if your sisters ever needed help. If you want to get more involved in philanthropy, talk about why it's important to you or why you think it is important to be involved in philanthropy work in college. You want to show these girls that you are dedicated to the values of sorority life, and that you could be an asset to their house by living those values!

Good advice from Active. Same as I'd give you. Used to be certain houses (Old Row) wouldn't even consider upperclassmen, but every sorority will take a few now. Just remember some of them will only take UC who already have good friends in the house, so you will need to be open to any group (which translates to be happy with any sorority that gives you a bid).

One thing's for sure - you won't get a bid if you dont' go out for rush.
Good luck - Roll Tide!!
