chance of expansion?

by: Hi

Why are there only 16 sororities here? My older sister goes to UGA and told me that they have 18 and are getting a 19th one (alpha phi) in 2017. I always thought Greek life was bigger here than at UGA so I was just wondering if y'all might be open to new chapters in the next couple years

It's really really expensive to open a chapter at Bama compared to pretty much any other SEC school. You have to have a gigantic house which will be very expensive, and you would need a sorority with a lot of national presence and name in order to recruit a strong colonizing class. The last few sororities to (re)colonize were APhi which is huge and well known nationally, and DG which used to have a chapter here so there were lots of alums helping out, and it's also really well known and has strong chapters in the South.

All the other NPC sororities are either on the smaller side or they are very region-focused. Not to say that one wouldn't be successful, but the amount of time, money, and planning to colonize here is humongous.

I looked up the list of Panhellenic sororities and most of the ones we don't have are on the smaller side. Sigma Kappa and Alpha Xi Delta might be able to do well though. It would be nice for us to have more chapters but yeah it would be very hard for them to successfully colonize

We will welcome new sororities when construction is completed on the existing chapters. There are at least 2 spaces designated for future houses, plus it's possible that Sigma Delta Tau may return to Sorority Row.
How many girls go through recruitment at UGA?
Remember that UA has had the most girls going through recruitment for the past 4 years in the ENTIRE COUNTRY.
We ARE bigger than UGA, we just don't currently have as many sororities.

Approximately 1600-1700 girls are expected to rush at UGA this year. They also have a quota in the 70s for each chapter. That's the main reason I wish we could have more chapters here so we could lower quotas. Chapters here are so huge that it can be hard to get to know everyone and I've always felt like the point of a sorority was to help make the university seem smaller and find your group

There are 17 National Panhellenic Conference sororities. Sigma Delta Tau does not participate in formal recruitment by their choice.

I think it is time for SDT to start fully participating. They have grown over recent years and have a solid, diverse membership. I think they would do well.

How many active members does SDT have?

I would guess they would need close to 180 to make a good decent rush. Otherwise their presence will actually hurt RFM numbers for PNMs.

I agree but SDT first needs to be on the row, in a house, to compete.

According to last fall's grade report, they had about 60, and I know they added a second semester new member class. If they had a house - which, once construction is finished and the sorority row musical chairs is done - they could do a special separate recruitment with all the sororities cooperating to build up their numbers.
Many years ago, back when SDT was still on the row, they were very selective and never pledged up to quota - by choice. So I don't know they would ever be at the same membership as everyone else. But it would be great if they were back among all the houses.

And I do see Sigma Kappa returning to campus. They're strong nationally and they have a UA history. It would be great to have them come back, too.

It would be great to have them on the row.

Do you think the university would allow/help such a smaller group since a big reason for the new builds and big property is to help with overall housing, dining, etc. ?

I think it's been proposed that if SDT got its membership up, they could take over one of the old swing houses (ADPi or Alpha Gam).

Another thing they would have consider is what kind of chapter they want to be. Right now their "brand" is a smaller, more laid-back experience for girls who might not have considered Greek life otherwise because they didn't feel they were a good fit for a traditional Panhellenic house. They seem to like being an alternative-type group, and they get a lot of women who choose them for that reason, so trying to change the identity of the chapter might not be easy.

Having the opportunity to move to one of the swing houses is a good idea. Not every chapter needs to be mega-sized or should be. And not every sorority needs to be a part of traditional formal rush.
