rec content?

by: Pnm

What exactly should a rec consist of and is it the same for each sorority? For example, I'm a legacy for a sorority so should my mom write my rec for that sorority or should I find another alum to write it? Also I was talking to an alum about writing me a rec for her sorority and she kept referring to it as a sponsor form. I asked her if the sponsor form for her sorority is the same thing as a rec and she said she wasn't completely sure. She said it was just the form from her chapter website. Is that the same thing as a rec? If someone could clear that up it would be great! I promise I'm not lazy, it's just that my research has shown me conflicting information and even though I'm a legacy, my mom doesn't really know either because recs weren't a big deal at her school.

I also have questions about recs... Are they supposed to be done online (like the forms on most national sites) or written? If they are done online do they just email them with your resume/picture? Do sororities have a preference to having them sent electronically or through the mail? Also are the new optional academic letters recommended/suggested? Thanks in advance!

don't get your mom to wriite your rec for her sorority. and yeah, it's probably the same. rec letters aren't actually letters (at least in most cases, i can't honestly tell you about all), they're forms that each alum gets from her sorority's website.

Your mom should let the chapter know she has a legacy coming through but that doesn't count as a recommendation. DG calls a recommendation form a sponsor form; same thing and maybe others have different names. Get two of them for each sorority. If you're a smart PNM, do this:
- Find out YOURSELF! Go to each and every national sorority website and learn all you can yourself about what is required by each sorority, what they call their forms, and who in the Bama chapters to send them to and the address. A lot of the forms and information are there for anyone to see and not a secret. They are all very similar and this won't take as long as you think. And if you can print out a form for a particular sorority and give it to your rec writer then do that. Don't leave it up to the alums, they don't always know what to do or have a lot of time for this, so anything you can do to help, because they are doing you a big favor, is appreciated.
- Provide a resume for your rec writers that includes GPA, activities, honors, whatever is needed so the alumnae can use it to fill out the form. Also a great photo that shows your face well.
- Provide stamped envelopes addressed to the chapters for your rec writers to use. They must send the forms and photos directly to the chapters, not to you. Do not send anything to a national office.
- Thank these women for doing this for you - write a note to them after recruitment and tell them where you landed

Alumnae go to their national sorority website for the form to use but anything you can do for them ahead of time will only make it easier on them and help you.
