sororities that are loose on grades

by: RTR

I believe by the end of this semester my GPA is going to be either a 2.9-3.0. I'm rushing in the fall, as a sophomore, and was wondering what sororities are loose on grades? Is KKG one of them because I'm really interested!

After the grade report this year, most chapters are absolutely not going to keep a GPA below a 3.0, if not higher. I know my particular sorority (which isn't even a top or middle tier, isn't taking anything lower than our new member GPA from last semester which was close to a 3.3. I don't know whether or not it'll make a difference that you're a sophomore, but it may hurt since they know you're most likely going to bring the chapter GPA down. You'll have better luck if you're a legacy or know a lot of girls in a particular sorority, or one girl really well in sorority who can advocate for you. Honestly though, your GPA is going to hurt you, and you'd probably end up on academic probation in a sorority anyways, so you may want to reconsider. Your best bets are the lower ranked sororities grade wise (not necessarily tier wise at all!). Those would be DZ, SDT, Alpha Phi, ZTA, and Gamma Phi, off the top of my head. I think KKG and DG also didn't meet ASA, but that doesn't mean they'll take the grade risk.

Would having ALOT of recommendations from alumni for different sororities help at all?

It may or may not, depends on the sorority and who the rec is from. I ended up in a sorority I didn't even have a rec for until the last day of rush, but I also had a 3.99 gpa.

Please, please do not start hoping to be in a specific group!

Be open to any sorority that keeps inviting you back. When you get dropped from several/many early on (for low grades) please work on forgetting them immediately and put all your energy into getting to know the chapters that are still asking you back. For all PNMs this will be the path to a happy Greek life.

All of the chapters are big, with hundreds of wonderful sisters, have awesome events and parties, tons of leadership opportunities, pretty letters and T shirts, and amazing houses!

Thank you, that makes me feel a ton better! Is there a way grades could be blindsided if I have a good personality/good looks?

Recs will help you be considered for the lower grade average chapters! Good luck!

I'm planning on getting recs so far from AGD, DG, and Phi Mu, they probably still won't consider?

Get recs to every chapter. Be open to any house. The are all great.

To RTR: Get recs for EVERY chapter.

As others said... No chapter wants their grade point average to go down.

You have a 2.9 which is well below the All Sorority Average of 3.33. There are great chapters that have lower grade averages. Be VERY OPEN to these chapters and ALL chapters. If you stop wishing for a specific chapter you will most likely find a home.

Sororities have slightly lower thresholds for upperclassmen, but they're not THAT much lower.
The other posters are right. If you fixate on only one or two (or even six) certain sororities, you just upped your chance of being disappointed. With those grades, you'd better to be open to ANY group that will have you.
Yes, even those sororities you think are "beneath" you. Doesn't matter if you're the top of Old Row or the bottom of New Row, the experiences in each sorority are pretty much the same.
In your case, sugarplum, you need to be happy with whatever you get. Because whatever you get, one way or another, is going to be pretty special.

If you have good friends in any of the houses they can pull for you. But a bid isn't a sure thing at those houses either. If other sophomores have better grades and friends in the house, they have a better chance than you. Be open to all houses.

I can only speak for my house, but you will be immediately dropped after first round. We have a very strict policy on grades and any PNM below a 3.2 will be cut. You could Miss Teen USA and we'd still have to cut you. I hope you find a home at another house! Best of luck.

-- Hundreds of girls will have better grades.
-- First round cuts will be very deep for those below a 3.0
-- Plan to pick yourself up after first round AND second round cuts and be HAPPY to return to ANY house that invites you back
-- Don't listen to rumors. ALL houses here are good! That is a FACT

I'm sorry this might be a dumb question, but are we talking about weighted or unweighted GPA?
