Lack of Representation within Greek Life

by: ...

I’m not normally one to make a post on Greek Rank but we have GOT to do better with the lack of representation within Panhellenic sororities, specifically those that would be considered “upper tier” ones. This is a widespread problem across Greek life and it is simply not just that people of color face discrimination during the recruitment process based on their race. I have been seeing sororities posting stories stating that they stand by their black sisters. However, if this were the case, why is it much more difficult for POC to join these “upper tier” sororities in the first place. I think that having the sororities post these inclusive messages on their Instagram stories in regards to systematic racism is helping to promote awareness and is a start but Panhellenic sororities simply cannot go back to ignoring the original problem because where was this energy before? When it comes to recruitment this coming year, we have got to do a better job at sticking to this message, instead of simply returning back to the predominantly white bubble that is so common. Sorry for the rant but this is a serious issue that needs to be changed in the future and we can’t be silent about it anymore.

No it’s not enough because someone that’s grown up in a predominantly white environment is going to have a different perception of what is deemed “hot” than someone that grew up in a minority community. Ultimately, the best way to increase diversity is to make an active effort to bid minorities who show genuine interest in the srat and are kind people. Don’t make everything so superficial anyways

Nope, normal people can tell if someone is objectively attractive. It's really not that hard

Basic social psychology says that the environment and culture you grew up in largely influences what you find attractive. But what do our psych professors know right? Hahaha take the L

You don't fight racism with more racism. You don't pick people because they're a certain race. You pick them because they're attractive, friendly, generous, etc... Just treat everyone the same jeez. It's really not that hard to look beyond someone's skin tone.

you do realize half the country and probably a good percentage of the school supports the "all lives matter" platform

Is that supposed to devalue my statement in any way? Anyone with half a brain already knows that all lives matter. We need to stand with our fellow black Americans, supporting them during such a difficult time. Saying that “all lives matter” is an obvious statement that takes away from the message of the oppressed.

I wanted to respond to this and say I completely agree, we need to do better. There have been too many times where I’ve heard people at Cornell describe A girl as Pretty simply bc she’s just very white. As someone with one parent of color, I am white passing but I have moments where I feel like I’m not white enough for my sorority and I hear guys talk about wanting certain girls And I realize I’ll always be too dark for them And too hairy and not white enough. Even if I was “pretty” I would never have the whiteness Greek life subconsciously looks for. I cannot begin to imagine how other women feel. I stand by this post completely.

i agree 100% and honestly think it's time to take this off of greekrank and just email martha... some higher ups need to see this, and to those afraid of being kicked off - if your organization truly isn't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about, but something tells me a lot of people are gonna find themselves in trouble
