changes happening
by: :)have you guys noticed any active changes in your sorority to change what’s being said in the testimonials? i hope after all of this uga realizes what is going on and checks their greek life, as a person of color i can admit i’m terrified to rush at this school and i just wanna know if things are actively changing and if this school is gonna be safe for a person of color to rush!
#1by: Yay
My sorority is taking increasing our awareness of racial disparities within Greek Life, at UGA, and in the US as a whole very seriously. I hope
other Panhellenic sororities will do the same. If you are a PNM considering Panhellenic sorority recruitment, I encourage you to go for it and find a house that genuinely welcomes you! :)
#2by: Well
Help me understand why you would go thru recruitment it you are “terrified”. UGA has amazing black sororities. They are amazing and powerful. If you, as a POC, are terrified to go thru recruitment, not focus on these houses. They are well respected. Seems to me you prefer the victim mentality.
There is a place for everyone. Find yours.

Like no one else of any color or background is terrified of rush? Welcome to your first taste of adulting. If you are looking for some sort of quota requirement to be instituted on your behalf, that's not going to happen. Ever. Would be a disaster for the chapter and the POC getting bids under such a system. What matters: connections, personality, common interests with actives, appearance and the way you present yourself, confidence, and the ideal combination of cute-sweet-fun. Each house looks at these qualities under their own particular lens and prioritizes them their own way. They want to know what you can do for them, not what they can do for you. Convince them that you belong.

Hi! I won't name what house I'm in, but speaking for my sorority I have seen a lot of change. Our executive office has been very reflective and is making lots of changes. For example, they were one of the first nationals to get rid of legacies because it inherently benefits white women whose parents had less barriers to higher education along with Greek life.
We also had a presentation during recruitment training that was very thorough on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We talked about affinity bias, tokenism, microaggressions, our sorority's past mistakes, along with what it means to be a good ally.
I can't speak to everywhere else, but I know there is at least one house on campus that is truly trying to change the culture within it. I really hope you've decided too go through recruitment but ultimately that you do what's best for you.

Hey! My sorority has been vocal about making change and has established a task force meant to educate sisters on inclusive recruitment and language. To be fair, we are considered to be one of the more “woke” sororities so I can’t speak for the others, but I know that our group chat has been full of resources and discourse to promote diversity in our chapter. I hope you have a good rush experience ;))

As a POC, I was also nervous to join Greek Life here. Thankfully there are sororities that are more woke and more inclusive on this campus.
I would recommend you rush but that you go in with eyes wide open and try to really evaluate whether a house is inclusive or whether they are not or whether they may tokenize you.
In general, the "bottom" houses tend to be more come-as-you-are and inclusive, though that is not necessarily a hard and fast rule. Look at a lot of things including who the sisters you can see are, whether they elect POC to positions of leadership, etc.
