second time rushing?

by: Sophomore PNM

Hi! Planning on rushing as a sophomore this fall when I rushed as a freshman last fall. Had to drop because of personal reasons, and I was wondering how I should approach that this time during recruitment? Will the houses know I have rushed before? Open to all comments, thanks.

I can’t remember if that’s info that’s shared. However, girls that talked to you last year might recognize you so it’ll be better to be honest and forthcoming so it doesn’t hurt you.

Often, people drop bc they don’t like the houses they’re left with so houses won’t give them the same chance as the first time.

They’ll ask why you decided to go through Recruitment so that’ll be the time to bring it up. Their biggest fear is you’re a drop risk so they won’t want to try to get a spot for someone that’ll drop. Just ensure they know you’re committed.

Thank you! So when they ask about going through recruitment I should tell them this is actually my second time around but then stress how I'm committed this time and am not dealing with the personal reasons that led me to drop last year? Also, I didn't drop during recruitment, I dropped after bid day. Will that hurt me? Obviously not expecting a bid from the same house, I'm not that oblivious lol.

Dropping after Bid Day is MUCH different than dropping out during the week. I wouldn’t bring it up, even if you’re asked “why you wanted to rush” or “why you want to join a sorority”. But many chapters will know you de-pledged. Sorority girls are friends with other sorority girls and the chapters who carried you deep into the week last year will likely remember you & remember you pledging somewhere.

If the reason is something that is FULLY resolved (like a sick parent who is now well) and does not reflect badly on your character (like you decided you were a bad “fit” for the chapter after 1 week and not making any effort to make friends)your rec writers should broach the subject in their recs. That way you won’t have to have awkward convo after awkward convo during your parties.

Thank you for being honest! My recs have already been sent in, and I don't think they broached the subject because they didn't know to. Any suggestions on what I should do?

This happened to me and I honestly am not sure if chapters know but if they do it doesn’t effect you in any way, but if anyone asks just be honest, rush worked out and I got my number 1 chapter

Yay! Thank you so much for the reply and reassurance. So happy for you and your first choice.
