is greek life big here?

by: She Doesn’t Even Go Here

I do not attend TAMU, but I am conducting extremely unofficial research. Just really curious about the culture of schools as far as Greek Life is concerned? Do a lot of people join Greek Life at TAMU? Is it a big deal or will you be fine without joining?

Compared to the overall school population ? No, because we’re not historically a Greek school and there’s lots of other orgs that people do here besides Greek life - but we still have a ton of sororities and fraternities here with large chapters as well

TAMU is a huge school of around 60k, so it also has a ton of other things that people join, like freshmen orgs (FLOs) and men’s orgs (Christian and non-Christian) and women’s orgs — because of those, not everyone joins Greek life... or they sometimes do both (common for girls do both, and guys sometimes do FLOs then rush), but there are people in those orgs that probably would have rushed if they were at another school that ONLY offered Greek life or where Greek life was an established thing that’s been embraced by the university — the university lately has been anti-Greek, like with screwing up frat tailgate spots last season

But with all that that being said, our Greek life is still the best social scene on campus compared to other orgs. You’ll be fine if you don’t rush because there’s other things to do that you’ll probably be happy with. And if you do rush, it’s a great time!

And to add:
TAMU has a history of being a military college with the Corps which hindered/stunted the growth of Greek life here (or at least the frats). For example, there’s a “Fraternity Row” street not too far from campus but only 2 houses (SigChi & another that Sammy just got from SigNu), because a rich Corps alum bought up land all around those 2 back in the day to stop the creation of a frat row, and now all the other frats houses are scattered all around town. But, there’s a whole block of a dozen sorority houses on Sorority Row

About 10% are in Greek life (5-6k Greeks out of 55k+ students), doesn’t sound like a lot but Greeks have a big presence on campus
