You CAN be in a sorority if you want to be.

by: real talk

I see we have now moved from XYZ or ABC sorority to who is doing COB because all of the women who dropped and regret it now seeing their friends join a chapter.

Real talk here...if you want to be in a sorority here, you can be. We don't have some super competitive system where only a certain number of girls get bids. I'd even be willing to say that nearly ALL girls who go through rush here could get a bid if they stayed in the process and rolled with the results they got. And I'd be willing to bet that most of those girls would be happy with their experience in any of the chapters here.

But if you went into rush expecting to only join one of two or three chapters, and you didn't get them, that's on you. You didn't really want to join a sorority then...you wanted to join ONE sorority. And that really limits your options.

More real talk, if you went through rush and got cut from houses, the likelihood that you will get a bid through COB from them is pretty slim.

I think this is true but we also have to acknowledge a flawed system and lack of discrepancy. 100+ more girls rush every year but quota isn’t set till after pref. Houses make too aggressive cuts early bc they don’t know how many people they can take. If 400 girls dropped after philo maybe that’s a sign

You’re making the point of the OP – all those PNMs who dropped after a Philo very likely could’ve gotten a bid if they rolled with the houses that asked them back.

Exactly. I feel like especially this year it’s just not normal, I don’t understand why they reopened registration??

If they reopened registration it’s probably because too FEW PNMs were registered not too many?

It is not a 100% flawless system but it is not a flawed system. Quota has to be the same for every chapter. The issue is that girls get too caught up in stereotypes. There would have been a place for almost every girl if the people who dropped didn’t. In past years, MCs have been well over 100. Girls get their heart set on only a few chapters and can’t look beyond them, or they think they are “better than” certain chapters. Absolutely some PNMs slip through the cracks with this system but for the vast majority, there were options. They just shunned them.

The current system, used by NPC nationwide, is a huge win over the prior system, which cut many pnm's entirely out of the process due to an actual flawed system.
In the old system, all pnm's could be invited back round after round no matter what. All sororities wanted as many pnm's as possible returning to their rush parties because it made them look highly desirable. They were not required to make their releases until right before pref, so pnm's that they ranked very low with no hope of a bid kept getting invited back and being led on for the sake of appearances. Meanwhile, the pnm's would be eliminating houses that wanted them but were not as strong at recruiting. Well, then came the pref round and all the required sororities’ drops, all at once. Pnm's had been dropping chapters where they were really wanted and had a real chance in favor of going back to houses where they never realized they were just invited for appearances. Dropped by all houses before pref. If those pnm's had any idea that they were never in the running for a bid, they could have concentrated on giving the ones that really wanted them a fair chance. They could have found their sisterhood. Pnm's DESERVE the COURTESY of getting released by a sorority as soon as it decides they aren't going to offer a bid. So that is why sororities are held accountable to make the choices at the beginning of rush instead of at the end and not mislead pnm's.
In addition to releases being required early on, Quota Additions eliminates the other flaw in the old system. Used to be that Quota was IT, not one more. If a pnm had two pref houses and each filled up before she matched, she did not get a bid at all. All the way to pref with houses that were happy to have her and then no bid. It was called being Cross Cut. Awful.
It is SO much better now; the sorority system is huge with far more pnm's getting bids and larger sorority memberships yearly.

COB does NOT exist for pnm's. COB exists solely to benefit the sororities by allowing any chapter to fill up to Quota if they didn't make it, or to fill up to whatever panhellenic has set the Chapter Total Membership. Most chapters are not eligible for COB and for ones that are there are not that many spots. COB is not your second chance backdoor rush.
