serious question

by: ?

Ok so I’ve seen this question asked multiple times on this website. In the fall I will be a sophomore transfer to OU. I have already signed up for rush and have recommendation letters to every sorority on-campus. I have a pretty full resume and an excellent transfer GPA and transcripts. I am also a legacy to one of the sororities on campus. I have had multiple alumni that have written my letters tell me that it’s going to be very very difficult to be taken in by a sorority as a sophomore since most of them target freshman who are able to offer a four year commitment instead of my three-year commitment . They have all told me I am the perfect candidate for rush based on my transcript and resume and that if I was a freshman I would be a no brainer but the only factor that could have a major impact is my grade classification. I respect these alumni’s honesty And opinions but can’t help to wonder if something has changed regarding transfer rush candidates since they have been an active member. While I have tried to remain optimistic, hearing this multiple times is making me doubt. Like I said before I have seen this question asked multiple times on this website and most of them have the same answers “ just go in and experience rush and see what happens.” While I admire those peoples optimism, I want a real answer. I want to know if I have a serious chance of getting a bid from a sorority and what sororities look for in upperclassman rush students. Please be honest if I have a serious chance because if not I do not want to waste my $180+housing cost and any other cost. I was and still am very excited for rush but I can’t help hearing this multiple times start to get into my head now. Please be honest. And for all of you that have read this far, thanks <3.

Going through rush as a sophomore was difficult regardless. Much more challenging because you do have one less year. Just because you have a stellar resume and activity history and GPA does not mean it will be a seamless process! I was in your shoes and it wasn't the best experience and I'll say it! Not because it wasn't worth it because I am SO happy, but if you are caught up in what other people are saying you are going to be thinking about all those other opinions while going through recruitment. You can't say "This chapter is bad because Person A said so". I was BLINDSIDED by houses that I had thought I knew and I really didn't. I went through the process and enjoyed the end product, but it's not for everyone.
My suggestion for you is if you have a great attitude and optimize your options you'll have a great time. IF you are so worried about having all the cards on your side and having it not work out than I think you would need to re-evaluate the reasons you are going through it in the first place.
Important to note, just because you have the letters, grades, etc doesn't mean "you're in"!
That's all!!!

Thanks so much!! I am not worried about having all the cards in my favor I just wanted to make sure I even had a chance to get a bid. Like I didn’t want to spend that money and then find out that all sororities will cut me just because I am a sophomore and not even have a chance, do you get what I’m saying? Just one more question (don’t even know if you will see this again) but what do you mean as in rush wasn’t the best experience? We’re you treated different because you were a sophomore or were you referring to that is wasn’t the best experience because you were caught up in what others were thinking? Thanks again so much for answering and your honesty and transparency it means a lot!!! I’m still very excited to rush <3

I think she’s saying to be open. You may not get the house you thought you wanted but in the end you may love it more than had you gotten the one you thought you wanted.
Really and truly every house has something to offer. Every house has girls that will fit with you. Have fun and you’ll meet your people.

Hey it's me again (for real though)
What I meant by the rush experience and not particularily liking it, is that it can really make you ask questions about yourself like "Why didn't they like me, I had the best conversation and I was cut" things of that sort so you really just overwhelm yourself with feelings such as, "I'm not enough" but anyone who goes through is ALWAYS ENOUGH. I truly believe you end up where you are supposed to and sometimes that means surprising yourself! I am so glad I rushed as a sophomore because I've gotten to grow in many ways that I didn't freshman year! Have fun and always stay true to you! It will be good I promise (:!
