Too many people like to think they are better than others.

I think it has to do with when they were founded/recolonized at Ole Miss. The houses with the older dates are thought to be more prestigious.

Chi Omega at Ole Miss was founded here in 1899, disbanded in 1912, and recolonized in 1926.
Tri Delta at Ole Miss was founded in 1904, disbanded in 1912, and recolonized in 1926.
Phi Mu at Ole Miss was founded in 1926 and never disbanded.
Delta Gamma at Ole Miss was founded in 1927, disbanded at some point, and recolonized in 1938.
Kappa Delta at Ole Miss was founded in 1927 and never disbanded.
Kappa Kappa Gamma at Ole Miss was founded in 1947 and never disbanded.
Alpha Omicron Pi at Ole Miss was founded in 1958 and never disbanded.
Alpha Delta Pi at Ole Miss was founded in 1961, disbanded in 1997, and recolonized in 2013.
Pi Beta Phi at Ole Miss was founded in 1962 and never disbanded.
Kappa Alpha Theta at Ole Miss was founded in 1979 and never disbanded.
Alpha Phi at Ole Miss will be founded in 2015.

If you take the last founding/recolonization dates, you get:
1926 = Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Phi Mu
1927 = Kappa Delta
1938 = Delta Gamma
1947 = Kappa Kappa Gamma
1958 = Alpha Omicron Pi
1962 = Pi Beta Phi
1979 = Kappa Alpha Theta
2013 = Alpha Delta Pi
2015 = Alpha Phi

If you move Phi Mu down below KD and DG, this ends up being the ranking (except some houses that were founded before/after each other in this order are equivalent).

The top tier is primarily reserved for those with strong alumni connections. Top tier is hard to get in unless you know someone. In other sororities across the country you are judged by your appearance, personality, etc. The prettiest and top girls go to top tier. Middle tier is average girls, and lower tier is girls with not as much going on. Ole Miss is not like that for top tier. They may be great girls, but they are chosen by connections. Middle and lower tier are ranked more on those qualities. Tiers are not important unless you are from the South. It's just a southern thing!
