open letter to oos pnms

by: out of state

Coming from out of state without connections you're screwed, unless you are one of those special cases where everything just happens to fall in place. But for most, especially if your average looking or have an average resume, RUSH WILL SUCK. You'll find yourself looking at your pref schedule with all lower tier houses. And if your like me, you'll regret leaving home and going somewhere where you don't know anyone just to get lower tier. When you could've easily had top tier at home but you pushed yourself out of your comfort zone. I just wanted to remind anyone who may find themselves here to remember that these house can be a gift. They're filled with other girls like you from all over unlike some sororities which are basically a conglomerate of states in the deep south. These houses will introduce you to new people and new ideas and perspectives from all around the country. These houses will help diversify you, which is why you left home in the first place. So just remember, while top tier is awesome, the bottom sororities can offer something top tier can't and don't hang your head for losing a game where the odds were already stacked against you.

when people say "no connections" do they literally mean you're coming to ole miss not knowing 1 person in a sorority? Or only knowing a few? Like 10?

My definition was truly not knowing a soul. That's how I was, it sucks at first and can tear your confidence apart during rush but it's all worth it

What if you're super social and great at meeting people? Is it too late to make connections like the first weeks of school? And you would be considered "pretty" to most people and have a stacked resume? Can those things alter your rush?

Being super social is definitely going to help you. If you're friendly and fun, that will get you very far. Not in the tip top houses, but the middle tier will definitely give you a good chance. Introverts are doomed.

Social and fun meaning going out not getting sloppy and talking to girls at the bars?

Thank you for an honest post. Most of us felt the same as you, anxious and nervous about rush. Honestly though, any school with a strong greek system such as Ole Miss will require connections from both in state and oos girls. I believe that all sororities have something to offer. To get the most out of your sorority experience it really matters less about the tiers but more about your involvement. To all pnms....good luck, relax and enjoy the once in a lifetime experience.

I'm from out of state and I didn't know anyone. I had resume I was involved but not that much. My grades and ACT was decent. I got everything back except I got cut from tri delt right before pref. I ended up in a top teir so I guess it just depends.

I can honestly say you are NOT a member of my top tier sorority! ONLY girls with connections got in. And 95% of those were chapter alumni list girls.

We cried every day to see our friends dropped. Without alumni connections, it's impossible. The remaining 5% were huge actives favorites!

If you read, I said it happens too buts it's rare. If all girls with connections were able to come in and get top tier than ole miss rush wouldn't be as hard as it is. I'm just saying that chances are they won't get top tier and that's no fault of their own

Thank goodness I chose Alabama over Ole Miss. I am not from the South, but the girls I have met here could not be nicer. So accepting of girls from all over the country. Defines "southern hospitality" with class.
