transfer
by: confusedIf a girl goes to a smaller college where she's been basically told she'll get into a sorority that is listed at ole miss as "top", I know when she transfers they have to take her. My question is: will they treat her differently? Let's say she's cute, friendly, smart, is fun, stuff like that? If her only real "ole miss" downside is that she isn't a legacy, doesn't know people at ole miss? My mom, aunt, and grandmother all went to an all girls college. My dad went to a military school. I'm the first in my family to go to a "greek" school and I'm just trying to understand it all. My aunt suggested I go to a smaller school and transfer in. A whole year? Any advice is appreciated.

First off, no chapter HAS to affiliate a member of their sorority who pledged somewhere else... the active members vote and it is likely you won't be affiliated especially if you pledge at another school where there is a big difference between chapter personalities. Do not use this tactic to get in a "top" sorority. Being a legacy of a sorority is not the only reason girls get into "top" sororities.
I'd suggest you take the advice of Ummm above and NOT your aunt, she is clearly misinformed.

First, how do you know that you'll fit into (and want) a "top sorority" at Ole Miss? You could go through rush and discover that you like any of many other sororities, including those in other "tiers". I've seen it happen. A lot (even to legacies of top chapters).
Second, this is not the way to get into a sorority period. Let's say you want into KD. You go pledge KD at a small, non-competitive school where the girls are a different personality than the KD's here (not better or worse, just different). You hate that entire first year of school because you really don't love them. You transfer here. Let's say KD affiliates you. You learn you really don't fit in. Then you drop out.
Also consider this: going back to using KD as an example. Let's say you wind up not even getting into KD at your smaller school. You get into X sorority. Then that kills off your entire plan to transfer to get into KD.
Bottom line - this is a terrible way to get into a sorority. Come here your freshman year, rush, and find your home. Stop fixating on top tier houses - that's a sure way to have a bad rush wherever you go.

Come to ole miss outright. If this is where you ultimately want to be, you get in, and can afford the tuition, just do it freshman year. Going elsewhere just for the purpose of taking a giant gamble on ole miss Greek life is really misguided advice. You will miss out on rush, bonding with your pledge class and a lot of other experiences that come with being Greek at ole miss your first yeae.
Second, if you are coming to ole miss from out of state and no connections and not knowing anybody, I am going to go out on a limb and say that our "top" houses are not what you will like best. Top at ole miss is defined by history and network. So many of the girls in these wonderful houses have known each other for a really long time. Versus other wonderful houses on campus whose membership selection process isn't primarily driven by those connections.
Bottom line - come to ole miss, go through rush, trust your gut, and find YOUR home. Not greekranks top tier home.
