chances

by: OOS

So I’m a PNM, I have a sister that is an active member of one of the “top” tier sororities on campus. However, I am from out of state - what are my chances? Will I get cut since I do not have “connections” so to speak?

You have a sister in a top tier, but you don't have a connection?

My guess is she means she doesn't have the connections required to get into the top tier (per this site you need to have gone to camp together not to mention high school lol)

I'm sorry. I was not clear. My sister is in a sorority on another campus. I have heard that the OOS girls have a tough time at Ole Miss. We live in Florida and she attends a university in Florida. I apologize and did not mean to come across as a "troll.' Thanks

You didn't come across as a troll at all! Your question was reasonable. Good luck! I will tell you the truth that legacies are often cut here. Be open minded and you'll have the happiest outcome.

It's hard for OOS girls to get into the Mississippi sororities, but there's lots of really good sororities that are very accepting of OOS girls.

you'll last a few days then be dropped.

without any connections and not knowing anyone and having a sister at a different school isn't much here.

You ARE a troll. That's not true without knowing the sorority or this girl!

Those are the only top houses at UF that are also top here

Nice, UF's DGs are now trolling the Ole Miss site. I guess they are universally relentless.

The top top three at UF are KD, Zeta and ADPi. AOPi, DDD and DG are top but not top top.

It really depends on the sorority.

Almost all houses have rules that make us invite legacies back one round, and almost all houses have rules that mean if you make it to pref and are a legacy, we have to give you a bid.

The problem is that there are a lot of legacies. I am in a sorority that doesn't take as many OOS and we have more legacies in rush than for a pledge class! And the problem is that every girl in the house knows somebody from high school, cheer, church, camp, cousin, boyfriend's little sister, whatever it might be and lots of those girls aren't legacies but they'll be pushed for hard. Then finally we have moms and advisors hovering trying to force us to take their country club friend's daughters who we don't know and guess what, if they donate or kiss up to the advisors their picks get sent up before ours.

Thats the problem with being OOS. We meet so many sweet girls during rush that go join other houses and later I'm like..."why didn't we bid her? Did we really cut her day 1?" But if you have 100+ legacies, and every sister and advisor is fighting hard for their #1 girl, well then it's a very rare OOS PNM or non-chapter legacy that will wow us enough with accomplishments and personality to get invited to join. We're not going to get every girl we or our advisors want...some will get dropped because they don't impress in person and some will choose other sororities. But we have so many to work with that it means legacies that aren't OM legacies and don't have a chapter connection will often get dropped before pref to make room for the cousin/cheer friend/advisor's top picks.

It hurts but that's also why there are so many strong houses here. To have six houses out of eleven that can claim to be a "top" chapter, and all very very very strong...that doesnt happen at many other schools. I have a friend who went to a school on the west coast with eleven sororities and only two are really considered a "top" house. Top tier - top in state girls, "middle tier" - top OOS girls that could have gone top sorority at most other schools.

I agree with this 100%. Although I will add it's entirely possible to be 'wowed' by a pnm and that pnm still not be extended a bid. Sometimes it's just a numbers game. I have met so many Panhellenic Sisters I wish were in my sorority, and often can't figure out why they aren't. Most of those girls were OOS without connections, but they are an asset to their sororities and would have been wonderful sisters wherever they went.

when they say in general that cuts with RFM is "just a numbers game," that's doubly true with variable quota. there's a different number of new members each chapter is allowed to take based on its size. Chi O is nationally the biggest sorority by membership, so if they are only allowed to take 100 new members, statistically there are 2-3 times that number of legacies. Being a legacy is never a guarantee.

This is the most honest, loving explanation I've ever read of what happens behind the scenes. Thank you for being candid. I wish every PNM would read this tonight.

I'd say this to any legacy, whether they're an OM legacy with a sister in the house now, whose mom was here 30 years ago or a non-OM legacy:

FOLLOW YOUR HEART. You might be a fit for your legacy house, but you might not. If you focus only on your legacy house, you hurt your chances with other houses because we can tell if you're disinterested.

Be open to EVERY house. You might find your home is somewhere other than your legacy house. I've seen girls pledge their legacy house just because it was their family member's house, not because they loved it best. And they were not happy.

And if you get cut from your legacy house, even if you thought it was a fit, consider that to mean it's not the right house for you...even if they loved you but like written above, they can only take a certain number of legacies. There is a place here for you, legacy house or not. Be open and have fun!

If being in a top house was that important to you, not actually figuring out where you would be happy.. Then Greek life and ole miss are not for you.
