iu doesn't need sigma kappa
by: TiredAs a sorority member, I am not that excited about adding another chapter at IU. It's not that I don't want more opportunities for pnms, I do, but recruitment is already too long and grueling. We need to fix our current system rather than keep adding new chapters. If we all would take about 70 members, we'd be fine and wouldn't have to keep adding new chapters.

I think opinions on SK are quite divided, but based on little data. Yes, there are 3 unhoused sororities and maybe they do deserve more attention from the various IU organizations (and their nationals?!?) about their house status due to the long affiliation with IU. SK had a very long, very good history at IU until 1994 when it de-activated, and a lot of alums who are excited to have a chapter back on campus. SK, like quite a few sororities and fraternities, has its HQ in Indiana due to the tax laws for non-profits in this state. But this close proximity means that extra resources, alums, etc will be provided to ensure that the first class is as good as it can possibly be. SK has probably closely studied the other three unhoused sororities and tried to find points of distinction, and also probably had closer relationships (due to alumni $) with the IU offices that can help it attain a house quicker (or at least promised quicker). Hopefully SK has also used the fraternities that re-colonized here successfully as case studies for how to satisfy the various Greek Life stakeholders. In any regard, those of us (like me) who are SK outsiders can at least observe that something is different-- how did they get the SK t-shirts to the Rho Gammas? (No other unhoused sorority every did that, to my knowledge.) If you are in one of the unhoused sororities, I would urge you to contact your nationals and have them start really putting together a plan for your house.

One final post on SK-- SK can make a difference and probably become an amazing chapter if they focus on girls who not only have a great personality, but also as part of that personality are 'good risk takers'-- that is, girls who aren't afraid to try to start something new even if it might fail. Starting something new is daunting- whether it is a new sorority or a new business. It takes a lot of time and it doesn't always work out. If SK can land women who are fun to hang out with but who are also really willing to build something from scratch, then they could do great on campus, and their alums could go on, after they graduate from IU, to do more great things. Think Pat Miller from Kappa Delta who, against a lot of negative feedback from people who didn't think she would make it, launched Vera Bradley and grew it into a major national/international brand. Or think Mark Cuban who started a couple of businesses here at IU while in college that didn't really take off but he got the experience. I think there is hope that SK could put itself on a good trajectory and that will be obvious as a success (or not) after a year or two. Still, for SK's sake, I hope that they really do have solid relationships with the stakeholders that can deliver a house- their nationals' coffers, Dean Goldsmith (and whoever the new Dean is), Dan Smith in IU Foundation, etc...

All unhoused sororities here, have it in their goals to attain a house, especially since Greek life is planning to extend housing eastward from the extension. However, not every unhoused sorority has made it to the minimum active, on campus years mark, nor has the financial backing to immediately attain a house. Getting an already existing building is easier than building one from scratch since renovations can be cheaper but most sororities want to be able to build a place that reflects their chapter and their ideals. Really the biggest hinderence of any chapter wishing to build is funds and consistent recruiting.
