iu greek life as a whole

by: disappointing

Not sure if this is the place to put this, but I am very fed up with the Greek system at Indiana as a whole, specifically sorority recruitment. Though I went through and recieved a bid to a chapter that I am glad to be a part of, I have friends who rushed and got dropped everywhere, or signed a pref card to 3 houses and didn't get a bid. The fact that this happens every year at this school is completely unfair and ridiculous, the fact that normal, attractive girls get dropped and are forced to wait to rush again is completely ridiculous. It doesn't help that the philanthropy events and social events are exclusive to greeks only most of the time, so it isolates these girls even more, who face months of being a "Geed" and being asked "Why aren't you in a sorority". These young women just want a place to fit in but instead end up more isolated than ever.

I agree 100%. If you truly feel this way, become your chapter's Panhellenic rep or apply for a Pahellenic executive position and help facilitate change. Nothing will change until Panhellenic changes it. Last year chapters were asked to take at least 50 women. All chapters cooperated except one. I would like to know if sanctions were taken against this chapter? Unless they were sanctioned, nothing will change. Change does not happen if no one tries.

Panhel's brilliant idea is the add chapters instead of just moving to quota total. I feel that after Sigma Kappa comes no other chapter will be interested in coming because of the current system. Individual chapter quota is the reason Tri Sigma will not come back to campus. All that's left is AST, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Tri Sigma.

Every house has the right to do as they want in regards to their nationals. Do not single a chapter out!!!!!! You do not know their situation!!!!!!!!! In the real world businesses should not be forced to hire everyone!!!!!! That's life. Yes there are problems with the system but don't you dare single a house out. It was two houses and don't use them to blame!!!!! I see you!!!!!!!! Panhel love!

Calm down sister. Yes, there were two chapters who didn't take 50 and one of them did COB to 50+. There was one chapter who deliberately chose to take less than 50. All other chapters who did not take 50 (other than the one) wanted to take 50 and eventually COBed to 50. So before you get your panties all bunched up, go ask your Panhel rep for the recruitment report from last year. It will confirm that ONE chapter did not take 50 in the end. If you can't read the Panhel report, I am sure someone in your chapter can analyze it for you.

PS...A college students should be able to write and express her opinion without a excessive exclamation marks. It doesn't make your point more emphatic, it only shows poor writing skills. As the post below you says, everyone is entitled to free speech. I am ok with us disagreeing. I don't need anyone's approval. Your opinion of that ONE house is yours, and my opinion of it is mine. Neither of us will change the others' mind. So be it.

The problem is this site that makes only a certain six houses important. So everyone puts them as a priority and doesn't keep an open mind for all sororities. They can only take so many girls and all houses this year will take 50 minimum and making seniors live out! I blame the girls going into rush thinking only certain houses are worth it. And then they cry when they didn't get a house and it's their fault. All houses are great and that's the biggest problem! KEEP AN OPEN MIND. If you want to be in the greek system don't only want top tier!!!!! Which is stupid to begin with! Tiers should not exist. It's the girls going though rush!!!!!! Grow up! Your fault!!!!!! Real world will be the same way!

All the so-called "lower" tier sororities took 50 plus girls so what you're saying makes absolutely NO sense. The ONLY answer is for the campus to switch to a total quota system instead of each sets their own. You know the system that works for the rest of the country that we are too good for. Total pnms signing cards/23 chapters = number of bids given out. Would be 70-80 most years maybe more NOT 50

Maybe the houses don't have room for that many girls like the rest of the nation. And maybe girls don't want to be forced to live out just so everyone gets to be in a house!!!!! Also they want to know their sisters and a smaller pledge class insures that!!! In the real world it isn't always how you want. Hard lesson to learn. so just because you want to be in the Greek system doesn't mean you get to do it. Sounds harsh but that's real life. I am not guaranteed a job just because I demand it. Life is one big competition. Other schools have their way and we have ours. IU keeps adding houses so they're trying to accommodate. Just makes me mad that the houses are to blame. We'd love to take more but no room!!!!!

We have more houses than any other campus and plenty of campuses take more PNMs than us. And on top of that we treat those houses like they're second class - call them irrelevant, weird, etc. IU sororities are only adding more houses because then they can keep doing what they want instead of what's good for the campus as a whole. No wonder GDIs hate Greeks so much - because Greeks hate Greeks that aren't them.

I didn't know anyone in my house and I got a bid. My best friend knew people and didn't get a bid but some how it worked for me and not her. Don't know why!. It's not right but she is maybe trying again this year. She's mature and not letting it be a problem in her life. Life ain't fair and Greek life isn't everything. She's happy in an apartment this year! You sound like that's all you care about! So you're the one with the problem about Greek life.

I think it's great that your friend is handling it well. Maybe it wasn't that important to her. A very good friend of mine had a near perfect recruitment, went to 3 prefs and also did not get a bid. If I'm being honest, she was a better candidate than me and I got in. She transferred to another Big 10 school and got into her first choice as a sophomore. She left because being a part of a sorority was that important to her and she was embarrassed and hurt by so many greek men calling women like her rejects and losers. Many of them just assumed she was in a sorority when they said it. it worked out for her and I miss her, but I'm happy for her.

Nothing I can't stand more than spoiled, entitled sorority girls. They're not all like that, but IU has more than their share.

Agree the majority of sorority girls are very nice! So you hate sorority girls because you aren't one. That's stupid why care about them if you hate them! Sounds mature. Good luck in the real world. Why are you on this site. This proves the majority of the comments are from girls NOT in sororities trying to cause trouble between sororities. Let it go. IU is too big to worry about this. Grow up!

I hear this every year. Besides min of 50 members this year, I see nothing else changing. Sororities don't care enough to change, although I don't know why a 21 year old senior would want to live in a dry sorority house.

Have we now a generation of people who think everything must be "fair"? If we had a total quota system, would people still say it was unfair because they got a bid, but not to their #1 choice? Just asking. Is the answer to change the system or to change the expectations of those entering the system?

By: Sorry but
by: Nope

A total quota system is not "fair" and that's not what anyone is asking for. It's fact that too many good pnms are being turned away at IU for no good reason. Total quota allows more quality women into the system not into their #1. IU is not too good for a system that all of Panhellenic uses outside of Bloomington.

PNMs are not being turned away. Many girls drop because they believe they deserve a higher tier than they receive. They don't belong in a house if status is all they crave. The Greek system here recruits based on character not on popularity. If you did not get a house it's because you did not fit in the house you wanted to be in and neglected other chapters who would have accepted you.

That is absolutely not true. Based on discussions I've had with friends in other chapters, probably somewhere between 30-45% of chapters do values based recruiting. It might be partially because PNMs aren't openminded, but they aren't the only ones to blame.
