sororities and study abroad
by: Curiousso I'm going to be a sophomore next year and I really want to rush. Things didn't work out for me this year and I would like to try again next year. But here's the problem. I've been considering studying abroad for my entire junior year through a program that's going to really benefit my major. But I still want to be in a sorority, so if I'm lucky enough to get into the chapter next year do you think it will be problematic if I study abroad for my whole junior year being that it'd be my first full year in the chapter? I really want to do both if at all possible. Are there some chapters that would be more okay with it than others?

Its called "selective information". Unless they specifically ask you if your going to do the study abroad program your talking about, don't bring it up. Once your in the sorority, they can't kick you out because your doing a program for school. The only time girls would care about that would be when your rushing, but once your in I don't think anyone would care.

Do not bring it up. It will hurt you a lot since you already are a sophomore which means they'll only get around a 1 1/2 years of full dues outbid you if you study abroad for a year.( dues are reduced when you study abroad and that also leaves an empty bed if it's a housed chapter)

It's not that simple. Many houses (mine included) make you sign a housing agreement that states you will live in for a certain amount of semesters. So if you got into a house that has a 3 or 4 semester mandatory live in policy, you wouldn't be able to since you're already a sophomore and 2 of your 4 remaining semesters will be abroad. Plus you really wouldn't be close either your pledge class if you left for a year right after becoming a new member. Just some things to think about...
