getting into a sorority

by: CA_2_IU

Hi guys, I'm from California and I'm attending IU in the fall. I've heard IU is really intense about their greek system and it's hard to get into a sorority. How true this statement in your experience? Am I at a disadvantage since I'm from California and don't know anyone?

I'm also from California. Transferred here, went through recruitment, got a bid. Thought that joining a sorority was going to make my college experience more enjoyable, wrong. Biggest regret, transferring to IU. I hope you have a different experience. Best of luck.

While knowing girls in houses can definitely help, your chances of getting a bid are still just as great if you show your personality, keep your grades up, and hold memorable conversations (in a good way) during recruitment regardless of who you know.

As far as it being hard to get into a sorority at IU, you probably don't need another person telling you how difficult it is here. I rushed last year and while I couldn't be happier with the house I ended up in, there were definitely points during recruitment where I felt discouraged and wanted to drop. Just try your best to keep an open mind, don't read to far into greek rank or reputations you hear from ignorant people around campus. Every chapter has great girls, fun parties and awesome opportunities, and if you stick it out and give each chapter a fair chance, I'm sure you'll learn that for yourself. Good luck with recruitment this year!

Do some research before you say that IU's PHA recruitment is just like every other university's, because it's not. We go by the bed quota system, and in 2013 only 64% of the girls that rushed got into houses.

And also, for this rude UMich student, I got into Illinois' business program but still chose to go out of state to IU because I liked IU better. Every big ten school has unique qualities of their own so don't go bashing on IU just because you have nothing better to do, because, trust me, we could all list ample reasons to why UMich sucks. It's people like you who are stuck up and rude that make people hate on UMich.
