Wish I went to college in the 90s

Tbh I’d do anything to go back to the 90s for a day and see what it was like to pledge a frat when there were no phones, no internet, and everything was really secret. Prob the greatest time.

My dad was a phi delt in the past around this time, had to do the elephant walk. Fortunately they just held hands through each others legs and walked in the circle. His stories of the fun parts sound way better than anything now tho. Seniors stayed involved with fraternities, people really only drank beer so people didnt fall victim to black outs nearly as much, people went out to have a good time instead of finding someone to sleep with, and pledgeship, while harder, was also way more about establishing bonds with brothers. Being dropped or dropping wasnt a bad thing back then

Usually around 10 seniors would live in fraternities and a majority of the senior class would still be involved. Now no seniors live in and are barely involved with the house.
Having seniors live in is a good thing since they’re a lot more mature, level-headed, prioritized longevity of the house(not getting kicked off), and tended to not drink as often. So when something bad happened during parties or in general, there was always a group of actual sober adults to take care of the situation or give good advice to the newer exec.
I think the lack of seniors living in has contributed a lot to fraternities getting kicked off in recent years.

Completely agree. Seeing those vintage posts on barstool of toga parties and keg stands makes me feel like we don’t live up to the full potential of greek life

lets be real though. Greek life is dying, it could be dead in 10 years or less. Its never going to be the way it was again. Those years are gone. Just appreciate what you got now and dont take it for granted. Cause youre kids might be saying the same thing in 20 years.

Here is the thing, yes Greek life at IU is dying. IU admin hates the fraternities and has been trying to kill fraternities for the past 15-20 years. Over that time frame, Sammy, Alpha Sig, Theta Chi, Beta, Pike, SAE, Delta Chi, AEPi, Phi Delt, Sigma Pi, Kappa Sig, Acacia, ATO, Phi Psi, Delts, Sigma Nu, TKE, Skulls have all been suspended. IU has kicked off more chapters than any other school in the country. It has forced at least 5 chapters to lose their houses, probably a $25mm loss in total. IU isn't interested in due process as there are no real rules. You can be punished for absolutely anything and there are no standards.

The only way forward is to find a way to legally separate the Greek system from IU. That takes leadership from IFC and from alumni boards. At this point, it also likely requires legislative action at the state level due to Bloomington zoning laws.

What this dude said is facts^

While it’s not gonna happen because all of our mega mansions are on school property, if everyone disaffiliated with the school it would probably save Greek life here. Unfortunately I doubt that’ll ever happen

No fraternities are on IU property…all are on private property. Check the Bloomington GIS system if you don’t believe me.

It just takes leadership and the willingness to stand up to BS to find a way forward. But at some point, the fraternities will need to break from IU.

IU hates the fraternities at this point and if they aren’t willing to treat chapters fairly, what benefit is there in continued recognition from IU? I’ve probably known 500-1000 guys who were in fraternities at IU, I’ve yet to hear a single guy extol the virtues of IUs administration or cite it as a meaningful component of their fraternity experience. However, IU takes the men’s chapters for $40 a man per semester. If you assume 125 guys average a chapter times 25 chapters (varies from year to year), that’s a quarter million dollars they are extracting from you annually. Do you think you are getting your money’s worth from IU?
