What happens if neither your 1 or 2 house wants you? Does it go back to your 1st choice

No one invites you to pref if they didn’t want you! You will be somewhere on their bid list. An invitation to pref means the chapter is willing to give you a bid.

As far as if it’s your first or second choice - depends on where you are on their bid list. If you are on their top bid list (say quota is 50 and you are in their top 50, and you rank them #1 - you are matched). If you are say 64 BUT 14 of the women ranked on their first bid list match elsewhere - then you are matched. If they fill before they get to your spot on the list and your second house hasn’t filled then you would match to the second house.
However, if both of your houses fill to quota before they get to you, then you can match with quota additions. So sometimes a PNM that is way down the list will still match to a chapter. And no one in the chapter outside of perhaps the membership chairman will know, and no one will care. However, if you single intentional pref (suicide) and list only one of the 2 chapters you are invited to, you are NOT eligible to match through quota additions. If you only got invited back to one house you are, and you will get a bid there.
So unless you absolutely would refuse a bid from your second chapter you should maximize your options.

This is from an old post that’s super buried but this is how it works
“ In the past IU has not adhered to national recruitment rules (just be happy you didn’t live through the horror that was bed rush) and it causes a lot of confusion about our recruitment process. We now follow ALL national NPC recruitment rules since last year’s recruitment including requiring all chapters being required to take quota additions.

THIS IS WHAT THAT MEANS: If a PNM ranks
1. ABC
2. XYZ
but she happens to not make it on either house’s top bid list after pref instead of being cut from recruitment entirely like she would have been in the past, that PNM will be matched with her top choice house. So the PNM in this example would receive a bid from ABC without ever knowing whether she was a quota addition or not.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! What this means is you will 100% receive a bid from one of your two chapters if you write both of them down. You can only get cut entirely from recruitment at this point if you write down one of your two chapters instead of both(suiciding). YES, this also means that if you only have 1 chapter instead of 2 that congrats you got a bid to that one chapter as long as you don’t go there and act like a lunatic.

Quota additions are considered a good thing because it means more women ranked that house higher after pref so the more QA’s you take the more desirable your chapter was. This process is done because in general no chapter should be inviting a woman to pref that they would not want to be on their bid list. I hope I helped you”
