Housed vs unhoused pros/cons

by: pnm

I have some housed sororities I love and one unhoused that I really like.

I really want the traditional sorority house experience. I was deciding on another college that was equal caliber to IU and the fact sororities have houses here won me over.

I've heard people say that not having a house isn't a big deal. I guess I'm just looking for opinions on a house vs no house.

When I was rushing I wanted a house, but when it came down to it it was a deal breaker that the chapter that I ended up with doesn’t have one. I absolutely love the girls and the connections I have made and I love that we don’t have all of the rules that come with living in a house. Just trust the process and know that whatever chapter you end up in is meant to be!

When I was going through recruitment I also really wanted a house but I ended up in a chapter that does not have one and to me I don’t see a difference. All the women in my chapter are like my best friends and we hang out all the time and I still get the freedom to live where I wanna live do what I wanna do and not be confined to the house. And I’ve met so many more people than I probably would have if I had been in the house chapter. Also keep in mind your junior or senior year you will live out. Meaning you won’t be in your sorority house so for us being in an out house chapter we just live out the whole time

Definitely dont drop a chapter you really like just bc they dont have a chapter house! Remember your list is likely to be pretty different tomorrow so it’s really great you’re keeping your options open and enjoying lots of different chapters

Definitely don’t drop because of housing! If you like the girls then one year of being in a house doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, it usually just means more freedom and cheaper dues. The sisterhood is also super strong in these houses especially

You could get a better experience than TPA or ASA

definitely don’t make your decision just based on a house. had i chosen a chapter that was unhoused i wouldn’t be paying thousands of dollars to do absolutely nothing.

Just some things from someone living in a houses chapter
Dues: way more expensive
Food: you don’t really get a say during dinner or lunch you get whatever is served unless you go buy food elsewhere
Boys: we can’t have boys over, people that live out or are unhoused can have boys and alcohol and not get in trouble
Fines: you get fined in a houses chapter, for not being at chapter on time, for not being dressed formally for formal chapter, For not coming to a philanthropy event you get fined a lot. TPA and ASA don’t fine their members. So that’s another perk

Ok...
1. If I want to get close to campus I pay a lot for nice apt.
2. Food -idc I don’t want to cook/clean up.
3. I don’t want to clean-some does that for you-bathrooms
4. Always someone up for late night runs. Also living in allows you the time or opportunity to rally get to know your sisters.

Sorry TPA and ASA I like having a house

Well then a houses chapter is for you. Those girls actually are really sweet and you sound very entitled and kind of like a brat so maybe aphi and pi phi are more your speed

Wow! Entitled because I like having a house. No it is a personal preference. You sound defensive. I never said anything wrong about those other two chapters. Person wanted a pro and con. I gave some pro for living in.

Also living In doesn’t mean you’ll really get to know your sisters. You don’t like to cook you don’t like to clean. Paying for an apartment will cost the same amount as paying to live in at a sorority house. Cost wise it’s no different. I think you just don’t want to cook or clean which does make you sound kind of entitled

Honestly I don’t know why me not wanting ot liking to cook is a problem. I am sorry I came off as entitled. I do not have a problem with unhoused. I just like convenience. There are pros and cons for both.

Now she definitely knows that those Srats are not for her. Great job alienating guys. She gave a opinion and you are jumping all over her.

I think the point is people in Greek life here at IU tend to treat the unhoused chapters like a second-class Greek life. They are literally no different than any other chapter on campus the only difference is they don’t have a mansion. They still party they still live with her sister they still hang out together it’s no different and when you come on here saying they suck because I don’t have a house or XYZ that’s what the problem is. If you don’t want to house that’s fine don’t say anything on Greek rank just rank them lower on your list.

So I guess the thread starter just wanted pro of unhoused? Not pro/con or housed and un housed as the title states? Both are great bTW. All the Srats have solid sisterhood. Ask questions during this round for more information. Happy recruitment.
