by: Ash

I did not get a house so what will my social life be like?
Will little 5 suck?
When will informal take place?
Do people transfer if they don't get a house?
I need a honest opinion I really picked IU because of greek life I wish I would have know how brutal recruitment is.

Dear Ash,

First of all, I am sorry things did not turn out as planned for you. I am truly sorry. Please do not transfer, like many things in life it's up to you to make lemonade out of lemons. I did not go Greek until my sophomore year, by choice. My freshman year I had a great time meeting people doing to fraternity parties and dances/social events. Use this semester to branch out and widen your social circle while working on your grades and professionally networking.

Are you open to any chapter at IU? I am relatively sure that there will be informal recruitment opportunities. The first thing I would do is contact your Rho Gam and ask her how to go about signing up for informal. Make sure you take advantage of every invitation offered to you, often during formal recruitment you don't meet the people you necessarily click with at first. During informal it's more relaxed and you can spend more time getting to know people. Ask girls from your floor and classes who pledged if their chapters are doing informal or COB. They are a good resource too.

Good luck to you!

In terms of little 5 I know a few professional fraternities have teams and parties and also that same strong friendship aspect you could be looking for. Another organizations with a similar friendship atmosphere is IUDM if your interested. You also can always try it again next year! Don't uproot your whole life by transferring because one thing didn't work out, there are so many ways to find a similar group of friends and make the most out of college!

around the next few days, chapters doing informal will start posting about it! if you’re interested in potentially giving some chapters a second chance then be on the lookout for when they start posting about their informals. usually ASA does it. TPA, SK, and DPhiE have all been know to do it but since they have houses now idk if they still will

Last year the only chapters who did informal in the spring were ASA and DPhiE. However things might be different. Last year every chapter made quota after formal recruitment but those two.

You can still have a GREAT time at IU without being Greek. Most people are not in houses. Join a bunch of clubs and you’ll definitely find a friend group. Also, you can still be friends with girls in houses and go to parties. Plus,it’s fun to live in an apartment or house, and then once you can get into bars Greek life matters even less.
