In the beginning the chapters have to make arbitrary cuts when they meet almost 2000 women. They can pick the top ones that have connections to the chapter and dismiss some at the bottom that they know are not a good fit. But, that literally leaves hundreds in the middle that they like pretty much all the same after meeting them for just 30 minutes. So, grades can be an easy factor to make the cut off with. It is quantifiable. As you move further along in the process and the members get a better chance to meet you grades become less of a factor. But, at first, if your grades are below norm, it can hurt you. How good is good enough? It depends on the chapter and the grades of other pnms. The more selective the chapter, the harder their cuts need to be so they don't string women along through the process. The chapters that don't get as strong of a return have more leniency.
