bids

by: PNM

Okay, so what i want to know is how common is it for a pnm not to get a bid? I've heard anywhere from only 50% getting bids to only 60 total last year not receiving a bid (that was at our panhel meeting), and i don't know which to believe.

Indianas rush is one of the hardest rush processes in the country. If you play your cards right and keep a good mixture of different types of chapters you'll end up with a bid, however, girls who lose the lower houses quickly will sometimes not end up with a bid because they didn't match. It's not common to not get a bid but it's not uncommon either. I know plenty of girls who either rushed and dropped or didn't end up with a bid after going through the entire process. If you keep an open mind and are polite to every chapter even if you aren't a huge fan of them you will end up with a bid. I don't think either number or percentage mentioned is actually correct. Also, some houses will be taking bigger pledge classes this year to fill their houses so keep that in mind because it gives more of an opportunity to get a bid.

the 60 total not getting bids is correct. Of the initial number that START rush, some are cut due to grades, and some drop because they only try for a few houses that cut them (so in other words, they quit because they are unhappy with their remaining choices). So, of the girls that had grades and did not drop out, 60 did not get bids.

Lesson learned? If you go into rush thinking you will only be happy in 1-2 houses, you are likely to be disappointed. If you keep an open mind and try to see yourself being happy in many different houses, you have a great chance at getting into a house.

hmm well about 2000 girls are rushing the 22 houses this year, and each house is taking about 60 girls (give or take maybe 10), so about 600-700 girls will be cut. its actually a pretty rough process.

Agreed. Last year there were a few houses that took more than the average 60 because of needing to fill their new houses. It was the best year to rush IMO. This year there are more girls rushing and a whole chapter is gone. Obviously don’t forget about grades, girls dropping, etc. But l would say there will still be quite a few that don’t get bids.

Of the 600-700 that you mention will be "cut", several of those don't actually come back to rush doe to grades. Also, several quit because they can only imagine themselves in one house and then they get cut.

The number of girls who go through the entire rush with good grades and an open mind and don't get in any house is not that high.

But yes, the process can feel brutal. We needn't scare girls with faulty numbers.

there was about 1900 when recruitment sign up ended, and that’s before grade cuts and natural drops. even so, this is a low number compared to previous years. this is probably one of the best years to rush from a pnm perspective and one of the most competitive from the house’s perspectives

Exactly! Don't forget about grade cuts which is normally a substantial amount of girls, first semester of freshman year is very hard for a lot of people. Not to mention all the girls who signed up and then decided they dont want to rush or go through the first round and decide it's not for them or don't get back the 1 or 2 houses that they were considering. If you keep a mix of houses you should be fine and get a bid. If you go through rush trying to slowly eliminate bottom then middle houses it's not uncommon to not get a bid. That doesn't mean your favorite house can't be a top house but it does mean that if all the houses you're considering are top you're much less likely to get a bid than a pnm who is considering houses from all tiers.

Right around 1800 women signed up for recruitment this year. The post above is correct, there is a significant portion of women who don't make grades or just decided for whatever reason not to come back.

PNMs need to rank smartly, instead of ranking with the crowd or by reputation. You have to decided what's important to you. For example if the mean girl from your high school is in a chapter and you know you can't spend the next few years dealing with her again, then put them at the bottom of your list. Don't keep all the chapters based on reputation. Each chapter has something positive to offer its members, be on the lookout for that. For some chapters it's a strong academic support system while other chapters offer more opportunities for community service while others may have more on their social calendar. Decide what your deal breakers are and keep those in mind.

Good luck all. :)

Thank you for your International inquiry. Yes, our school is going to experience fewer pnms this year and yes, we have one less home available. Just follow the good advice from the packets tomorrow and eventually you ought to be able to join somewhere.

There will be a number of girls who signed up for rush that will then find out that their grades are not such that they will get a bid, so they won't rush.

Also, there will be girls who think they will only be happy in that ONE house, and then they will drop out of rush when that ONE house drops them. If you keep an opened mind and have good grades, chances are good that you will end up happy. If you think you will only be happy in that ONE house, then the math is definitely stacked against you (1800 rushers, ONE house takes about 60)
