advice for survival?

by: IFC Exec Alum

I was sad to see SNU expelled this week and I wanted to offer some advice. I am a former IFC Exec who is about 10 years removed from Bloomington. My parents were Greek at IU as were my older brothers. My girlfriend was in a sorority at IU and and is a recent graduate. In other words, I have perspective that spans multiple decades. I have been doing a ton a research on IU's Greek system as my house was suspended recently and I am working with other alumni to develop a plan to bring the chapter back and ensure it succeeds.

I approached this problem like I would an investment. I do a ton of research, consult with other experts and develop a thesis on how to improve operations and reduce risk. As such, I have probably completed north of 100 hours of research on IU's fraternity system over the last year and at this point am probably one of the top experts when it comes to the history and policy of IU’s Greek system.

I genuinely want to help as I dedicated hundreds of hours as an undergrad to trying to improve the Greek system. I credit my fraternity experience with a large portion of my personal and professional success and I hope that others at IU can have an equally solid experience, even if my chapter is temporarily off campus. I have research on why certain chapters at IU avoid suspension and others seem to be perpetually in trouble. I have also done research on why nearly all of IU’s housed chapters have been suspended over the last 25 years but this same effect has not been seen on other large Greek campuses like Alabama or Illinois.

I am a bit busy with projects this week but if anyone genuinely would like some advice, I will make some time to share some of my knowledge. If anyone running for a fraternity chapter executive position would like the chapter specific information or anyone running for IFC would like advice on how to improve the structure of the Greek system so chapters are not getting expelled all the time, please reply to this posting and let me know you are interested.

Sure, Ok...I will try to make some time to get something put together by Wednesday night. That may be the chapter based guidance based on which chapters avoid trouble and how. Some of that may seem common sense but some of it may prove helpful. It is based on research I put together on all of IU's chapters.

The second set of suggestions on how to solve the systemic issues with IFC and IU's Greek system may take a bit longer. This will mostly be focused on administration issues and the disciplinary structure. I will try to get something put together on that by next weekend barring any major disruptions this week.

These will both be pretty lengthy posts when completed.

Unlike a lot of other alumni, I don't understand buy into the attitude "this generation is just a mess and can't seem to do anything right". From my research, I have found that that has literally been said about every group of undergraduates since about 1910. I just really hope my advice can help things get better.

Best regards and have a great week.

You'll have to address how putting 50-100 hormonal 18-21 YO kids in a house with virtually zero adult supervision is somehow a "good idea."
