it's simple, really

by: Moi

Here is what is wrong with our sorority system. 1. Too many mediocre houses 2. Not enough quality houses 3. Allowing sororities on campus without a house 4. Forcing upperclasswomen to live in the house when they have outgrown the rah-rah stuff 5. Not making more room for underclasswomen in the house by increasing sizes of pledge classes 6. Dues/fees are too expensive. 7. Not adhering to policies that have worked on almost every other campus that increase sorority size and helps reduce costs. 8. Too many cliquey houses filled with suburban Chicago girls.

No - It's really this simple - we are not respectful of each other.

It irritates me that you think to be a sorority at IU you have to have a house.

Well, having a house is pretty much the standard at every other major university. Sorry I'm not sorry that you are irritated, but you really need to get out more.

Dear Bless, you obviously don't know as much as you think you do. Girls in larger Greek systems like Arkansas, Mizzou, Georgia, Alabama, UT, etc aren't as rooted in the house culture as you think. My friends who go to SEC schools don't live in more than one year if they get to live in at all. At Arkansas, the only way you're guaranteed to live in is to be on exec. Yes, they have a house, but only 25-15% of the chapter lives in during a given year. IU is the only school I can think of where the culture is to live in the house the entire time they are active, which sucks. By the time I was 21, I was over it. Also, with so many dietary restrictions, it's harder for some girls to live in. If you have to eat gluten free, sugar free or dairy free it's really hard to live in the chapter house. If IU would let the seniors live out and any juniors who want to, the chapter would have better retention, girls wouldn't drop.

At most schools with better Greek systems the girls in each pledge class are very close because they are together all freshman year (after joining in August) and work together on Homecoming, making grades, their philanthropy etc. Then they become even closer while living in the house as sophomores. Most then go on to live with their sisters in apartments as juniors and seniors, and they most often choose to live in the same apartment complex. Some even are referred to as the ChiO annex or the PiPhi annex because there are 50+ people in the same sorority who live in that complex. It works out extremely well because juniors and seniors pay partial dues and always go to the house for lunch and, of course, for formal dinner each week and chapter meetings. But they don't have to put up with the sorority b.s. when they are older and really into their majors and all of the academic demands that are put on them. It's a great system and the houses really thrive because they have so much money coming in. Hardly anyone ever drops out or deactivates, plus you get a taste of living on your own in an apartment, which, to be honest, should be part of anyone's college experience as a step toward independence.

If anything is going to change for the better with IU sororities it starts with each HOUSE! Personally, I would LOVE to see a change for the WHOLE Greek System. Starting with taking more then 50+ girls per PC Class!

maybe there is nothing wrong with our Greek system. Maybe the problem is that girls who don't get into a house are sad (understandably so) and it is easier to think that the problems lies with the entire Greek system.

The real issue with the Greek system, especially with sororities, is that most, not all, but most, people only see it as a forum for partying. The focus isn't on sisterhood or community service or most other things, it's really just a mechanism for people to go out. Example is when girls go out the day or two after getting their bids. The second girls get into houses, one of the first things they do is party. What does that say about the values of your sorority? And the other thing is, people somehow think that social preference equates strength of a sorority... what it should reflect is do girls become better leaders as a result of their greek experience, do they improve their grades... do they grow as people? Maybe if we ranked those things we would see change in the Greek system. And whoever said respect is totally right... so many people in our greek system are just so disrespectful. Don't get a big head just cause you get in a house that is has hot girls in it

Literally love this. The point of being in a sorority is for sisterhood, leadership, philanthropy, and personal development. Sure, you may have 'hot' girls who like to party often but if you can't go a week without drama or don't know the name of everyone living in the house let alone your pledge class (this is just sad...), what are you doing in greek life??

Our top houses are 100% based on looks. And our greek system is mainly built on partying.

If you don't like IU, then by all means take your sorry ass out of here. This is not a second rate university, there are several programs nationally known: business, SPEA, music, journalism, informatics, etc. The Big Ten is known for large state universities that create a lot of research. You sound like a bitter jerk who didn't get into Northwestern and is still butt hurt. I applied to two only schools: IU and a lesser Ivy. I wanted IU all the way from an early age and made sure I was able to get in as an in state student. When you get out into the world and out of your Chicago suburb you'll find out that IU is respected throughout the country. People might know us for basketball and Little 500, but we hold our own with most other large public universities. Go Hoosiers and Go IU.

^^^^^ Honey, you need to get out more. Are you really saying that someone who only aimed as high as attending IU is much more worldly and sophisticated than someone who grew up in the third largest metropolitan area in the nation? And if you were a bit more informed you would understand that every land grant university and every institution that offers bachelor's, master's and Ph.D.'s is, by definition, a research university (not just those in the Big Ten). And if you really knew what you were talking about you would know that a school is either an Ivy or not, that there is no such thing as a "lesser Ivy." And you also would know that not one of the programs you mentioned is in the Top Ten nationally. But, hey, you're from Indiana, so you know it all.

Not to mention the ranking system tears our sorority system apart. There are SO many campuses that have strong greek life and differentiate houses based on positive PERSONALITY and PHILANTHROPY and ACADEMICS rather than looks and popularity. Greek life is about overall community, not just within your chapter.

All of you immature enough to be ranking each other make me sick. grow up. Join the the organization you feel a connection with. The end.

Ranking I agree with the first paragraph! Issue with your second paragraph. Last sentence.

It would be GREAT if we could but you know that's NOT how it works at IU....
We lose to many wonderful girls because of an OLD METHOD. NOW is the time for IU PanHellenic to change the PROCESS!!

That's fair, it was to make a point but hopefully the general message gets across. If enough of us band together and change the reputation of IU greek life, we can hopefully stop the horrible rankings
