Why in the world does IU PanHell allow sororities to organize on campus without having a house?

What a stupid question.

Here's a better question. Why would anyone choose to be in a sorority that doesn't have a house? It defies logic.

Defies logic? Because someone makes a different choice than you would? Kind of dramatic, don't you think?

Not everyone places the house at the top of their list, it's the members. Not everyone can afford to live in a house. Not everyone wants to live in a house. Not everyone has that opportunity. Some strong women decide to join later in their IU career when housed sororities won't even consider them.

Is everyone getting along too well? Time to dump on the unhoused Greek life organizations on campus? Every single day, someone has to remind people on this board that they are adults now and they don't need to compare and put down others to feel self-worth.

It has nothing to do with self-worth, but everything to do with allowing weak nationals on campus. If a national can't afford to house its dues-paying members, it shouldn't be here. And most Panhellenic organizations wouldn't allow it. People on this board talk about how this is the best Greek organization ever known to (wo)mankind. allowing sororities on this campus who can't afford to house there members is not exactly emblematic of a strong Greek system.

You honestly should be looking at the age of the organizations on this campus. How are you supposed to expect sororities who have been on campus for less than a few years to have a house when IU makes the vetting process take a couple of years to even have permission to buy land here.

Plus, how does a house make a sorority better? There are other campuses across the nation where not a single Greek chapter has a chapter house and this includes "strong" national organizations.

But see Nope, this has nothing to do with you, yet you still argue the point. As "Simple" said, there are reasons that some women don't want to/can't/choose not to live in a sorority house. Instead of questioning and belittling them, accept their decision and support Greek life.

I know some great women in those chapters - some who chose them because they don't have a house for personal and/or financial reasons and some who would like to have a house, but make the best of the opportunity they have. They don't plan on being unhoused forever, but it takes a lot of time and $ to build a house.

IU needed to bring on additional sororities because our sororities refuse to take total quota.

I think on most campuses a sorority needs a house before they can colonize. a strong national can afford that.

Since i literally have no idea if this is true or not - please give examples. i would think most would want to make sure their chapter will survive before building a house (even big nationals)- renting possibly, but that's not really an option here - except for the occasional frat charter suspension. Also, I believe sorority houses are financed and run through alumnae housing corps rather than nationals - please correct me if i'm wrong here.

can you give us an example of a university where the panhel allows the chapters to have a house first, then colonize? never heard of that.
