transfering
by: IndyGrlI am from Indianapolis and pledged at Mizzou, where there are 15 sororities and about half of the girls going through rush don't make it into a house. I am hoping to transfer to IU as a sophomore, but I am wondering how common that is and whether I will be able to make friends since I am not part of a pledge class. Also, at Mizzou our pledge classes are about 75 girls and we only get to live in the house one year. How is that different from IU? I plan to contact my chapter at IU, but I don't want to come across as stupid and would like to know a bit about Greek life at IU so that I don't stick my foot in my mouth. Thanks so much in advance for your help.

At IU pledge classes have around 50 girls in them because every house has at least a two year live in requirement. We also have deferred recruitment so rush isn't until the spring semester and most girls live in the sophomore and junior year. Hope that helps at least some!

Contact your national organization to make sure you find out exactly what you need to do in order to leave your chapter on good terms and be able to re-affiliate with the chapter at IU, if you'd like to. Also, contact the IU chapter before the school year is over. They may have an opening or two in the chapter house if they have members who are transferring, if you're interested in moving in. Do you know any members in the IU chapter from your high school?

Thanks for the advice. I never in a million years thought I would be able to live in the house, so I will do what I can to make the contacts I need. That would be amazing. The system here at Mizzou is so competitive that some people NEVER get to live in the house. Now that I am changing my major from broadcast journalism to business, I think IU will be the place for me. One more thing: some of the comments on this site are so nasty. Do you think they are a true reflection of Greek life at IU?

That's not remotely true about Mizzou and the number of PNM's that get cut. Almost everyone will get placed, except a bunch of stupid girls drop out in a snit because they think they're too good for the houses they have left.
IU is completely different. Placement rates are really low because of the bed rush. We're the only school in the country that still does it.

I don't know why people are so awful on this site. In fact, we can't even be sure that they're greek, and if they are, shame on them. I think you will find that you will make wonderful friends here. I wouldn't trade my experience at IU for anything.
