COB is decided after rush starts depending on which houses don’t get enough girls

It’s not always just that- plenty of chapters make quota, but because of resignations, transfers, etc., some chapters need to add more women above formal recruitment quota in order to reach chapter total. Total is a number the gets reset the day after recruitment ends, and panhel sets it after assessing all of the chapters and their roster size.

Chapters can fill the spots through COB. Usually, nationals expect their chapters to always be at campus total, and they expect them to COB if necessary to get there.

I’d argue that almost every house on campus has at least a spot or two to fill, if not more, because everyone usually has at least a couple of resignations or membership status changes. Some chapters (usually the “top tier” houses) fill the spots quietly. Others will be more public about doing it.

Not sure why doing COB should come with any stigma. It helps the entire panhellenic community when the chapters are all thriving and membership is strong. Imagine how much could be accomplished to strengthen the greek community if all of the energy on this page put toward cutting houses down was put toward building each other up.

Regarding how hard it can be to get it, it’s just a trickier process to navigate. No one holds your hand to be sure you know about, or that you are considered by, all the houses participating in COB.

Register your name and info with panhel, letting them know you are interested. Chapters may or may not use the list from panhel, so it is also good to reach out to the chapter itself, especially if you have a friend or connection there. That said, that can backfire too, if your contact doesn’t really want to help you, etc. Some houses only let in existing friends of their members and won’t need to use the panhel lists at all. But for someone without any chapter contacts, registration with panhel’s list is a good first step.

There’s no structure for handing out a bid, so if you are attending COB events at more than one house, and the house you like second best invites you to be a member first, you may not have the time to wait to see if you get asked by your first choice house. The chapters do not coordinate and hand out bids at the same time. It is all done individually by each chapter, however it works best for them.

And as for the process, some houses may do coffee dates, or formal events, or something completely different. Some may announce the dates so people can come, or others might be invitation only. It’s really a lot more casual than regular recruitment, and again, the pool of houses you will have to choose from will likely be far, far less than during formal recruitment.

I’d still go through it though! You definitely should give it a shot. Best of luck.

Currently gphi deeph and KD are soliciting COBs on the panhel page. But check back over the next few days, odds are a few more will join that list since total is determined by comparing chapter sizes
