ucla sorority reality check

by: realchic

The incredibly cruel and horrible comments being written this week about our UCLA sorority community is truly disheartening. There seems to be an overinflated obsession among some of these individuals about the importance and relevance of being a sorority considered in the “Top 5”. Time for a reality check here. I went through the rush process at UCLA twice and joined a “upper mid-tier” house as a soph.
I learned a lot about the process after my first year about unrealistic expectations and the true reasons I wanted to be in a sorority. Sisterhood, friendship and support.

sorority rush at UCLA is super competitive. Each house takes 60+ PMN’s and there are over 1000+ rushing. Only 360 girls will get in to the “Top 5”. This group includes legacy’s, soph/jrs and transfer.
I was disappointed my first year when I did not get asked back to my top choice. I did not spend enough time getting to know the other great houses because I was too focused on a “Top House” choice.
Many of the sororitys considered in the top 5 are looking for Cali girls with over 1000 instagram followers and loads of super model bikini shots. Great if this is your vibe and you connect on this level. This is not who I am or what I wanted out of a sorority commitment.
I realized in my second rush, that there were 10+ great houses at UCLA all with great accomplished girls. Reality Check…if you get in to UCLA you are smart, active, unique and accomplished. With so few houses on campus every house has beautiful, smart and great girls. If you want to be defined by an outdated, ridiculous ranking system---than focus only on “Top 5”, but you will likely be disappointed.
These rankings are perpetuated by a few girls in some of the houses who rely on old reputations and frat perceptions based on social media pictures of “hot girls”. This ranking BS seems to be important to their self-worth and identity. They make nasty comments on this page about the general reputation or vibe of a house and really know nothing about the house or the personalities of its sisters. Every house does great social, philanthropic and sisterhood events. All the houses at UCLA are beautiful. Rankings are ridiculous…we are all lucky to have fun great homes and sisterhoods at UCLA and every house has amazing attributes and women. Don’t get wrapped up in the stupid ranking system-you will miss out on meeting and finding a really great sisterhood and home.

Agree for the most part but you can say this without tearing top houses down. Despite what you may think about their sisterhoods, some girls genuinely feel at home in their house and just because they’re a top house that doesn’t mean you should take away from that. With that being said, rankings are overrated and PBMs should go where they feel the most comfortable m-whether that is a top house or not. Good luck with rush girls!!!
