Virtual Greek life??

by: yo

Does anyone have literally any idea on how tf virtual recruitment is going to work this fall? Or will Greek life get to have semis, parties, or barn dances?? I know there’s a lot to figure out, but it would be bogus if the university enforced Greek life to follow social distancing guidelines and not other organizations

Heard we might lose quite a few. Some PNMs are saying they don’t want to pay dues if Greek life is different this year and some houses have financial problems.

I really don’t blame them. They really won’t get anything out of joining if they rush this fall. In my opinion, it’s not worth it. The University has said in FAQs that they will encourage Greek life and all RSOs to follow social distancing guidelines from the CDC. Phase 4 is gatherings of 50 or less. While I can’t see frat parties stopping anytime soon, it would be really difficult and irresponsible to have semis/barn dances/date events as they normally occur. It sucks, but I think as long as we realize that now and come up with well-planned, fun alternatives to make up for it, it doesn’t have to be such a bad thing :)

i'm not sure how every sorority works, but for mine we have staggered arrival by pledge class at our barn dances and semi's, so I think that could easily be tweaked so that there are less than 50 people there at a time. i also do not see frat parties stopping anytime soon, unless ifc tries to enforce them like they do for unofficial and actually do rounds at each of the houses...which just isn't realistic.

i'd also say that it's still worth it to rush. even though you may not have packed events, it won't stop you from meeting at the library with girls in your pledge class, or meeting up with your big for coffee. it's a lot to consider for sure, and i'm not trying to be all 'go greek no matter what'! but for previous introverts such as myself, my sorority is where i came out of my shell and made amazing friends that i'm not sure i would've made otherwise.

I was thinking this might be a cool opportunity to get to know people more closely, smaller groups means more time chatting with people. I think it could be kinda fun
