Question about phi mu??
by: Possible transferI’m a Phi Mu from a different school and wanted to know why Phi Mu is ranked so low? Like are they new and that’s why they are low or are they just bad cause of something else??

Phi Mu is low for a few reasons:
1. They recolonized in 2016, so they’re fairly new. I think they also had trouble with a very early pc being kinda rude to some frats
2. They’re building a new house and use that as advertising but they don’t know when it’s going to be done. Their current house is historical, but isn’t very nice.
3. They can’t really be as selective during rush because of the above. This is probably the biggest thing that keeps them default bottom.
I checked them out during informal and I don’t think they really have sisterhood issues and they seem to go out a good amount. The people I’ve met are decently nice. From what I’ve seen on here, people also think some of the girls aren’t cute and I can agree that they’re not all super pretty, but it’s up to you to decide if that matters.

To be completely honest if you plan on transferring here then Phi Mu might not be the best option for you especially if you are used to having outgoing, good looking sisters. I’m not trying to sound mean but Phi Mu is generally ranked 18 out of the 19 sororities in Panhellenic. Just go through the rush process and if you still vibe with them then go there.

First of all, keep in mind that sorority prestige/rank is not really important here after maybe sophomore year, and definitely not after you graduate. That is different than some Southern schools. Also this is a smart school (avg ACT 29 for class of 2023) so anywhere you go you will meet girls with bright futures who will be good proffessional contacts.
Now on another note, related to rank. With your experience at a prominent house, you are in a position to potentially help this relatively new chapter become more established and popular. Some of the girls might be a bit socially awkward and not as stylish. If you give them pointers and help them be a bit more refined, don't you think you will have women who will be your good friend for life? As opposed to some other house, where you will be just another chick to get drunk with for a couple of years.
Food for thought, it's a friendly school, you will probably enjoy Champaign no matter what path you choose :)

It's up to you if appearance and tier matter because they aren't the best looking or the most selective, which is partly what makes them a bottom house. But being less selective also means they have a variety of people so you will find some decently nice, fun girls who like going out. Another thing to remember like the other posters have said, is that UIUC is more of a bar school so if you join a bottom house or don't join a house at all, you will still be able to have a good social life in some way.

I’m in a higher ranked house. While phi mu wasn’t a good fit for me as a freshman, the comments above seem valid reasons why a transfer might consider them, even if they are ranked lower than what you are used to now. Of course, the bar life is great and there’s no shortage of social options at UIUC !!
