letters of rec
by: UIUCHow I'm important are letters of rec for formal sorority recruitment at Illinois? I've heard that they're not a main factor of getting a bid from a house

#5by: recs
are more important than you think
we actually really read them and they introduce you before the first party
my house is known for being selective and sometimes a rec will actually get you on our radar.
never underestimate the importance of recs
we receive negative recs as well, those get sent without the pnm even knowing.
i believe the old term is blackballing someone

what makes you think only 50 out of 1,000 girls have recs?
we get a lot of recs don't fool yourself because you haven't taken the time to secure them.
the best pnms take recruitment seriously.
the houses spend an incredible amount of time preparing for recruitment
we have 20 minutes tops and 20 parties, you had better be very special and make sure you don't get paired up with a quiet member who does not contribute much or worse one who forgets your name
there are over 1,000 girls you had better do something to get noticed.
personally recs with pictures are the best way to get noticed

a bit quiet and from out of state. I had recs for 9 of the sororities and am a legacy in 2 of those. I was invited back to at least round 2 to every sorority I had a rec for including the top ones (actually, not sure abt tri-delt as I really didn't like them at all and put them on the bottom of my list so I did not go to round 2 there). I also got invited back to places I had no rec. Two of the three preference parties I went to I had a rec. I ended up in a mid-tier sorority where I know I had a very good rec. I am really happy there. It is the perfect fit for me.

i'm out of state and know no one and was so unprepared... i'm a legacy of one of the "lower tier" houses which i feel certain would accept me if i wanted it but i don't even want to be in it. meanwhile i was dropped from a house i loved, but i only realized after the app process that i have a family friend who was in that sorority.
and i got... fewer houses than most people. not a very small number but few enough that it makes me feel like i should've been more prepared. :-/
