best bar pull

by: Illinois Alums

A group of us old Illinois Alums(from different fraternities)decided to check out this website after Homecoming. One thing that struck us was the purported "rankings"of the fraternities that seemed to be based on "bar pull" or being self-proclaimed Kings of the so-called "royal bar crawl." To be clear, NONE of the national fraternities (or sororities) has "bar pull" as a founding principle.
Because all of us are businessmen, we thought we'd enlighten you as to "who" may be spreading this idea that "bar pull" equals fraternity greatness - that would be BAR OWNERS and managers. And, unfortunately, some very naive and immature students are duped into participating in this insulting affront to all fraternities (including their own). They think that their fraternity's reputation resides in "bar pull" magic, and it's what makes them the "in crowd" at Illinois.
So here is some advice from your alums. For those of you who think "bar pull"is a high indicator of your fraternity's strength, please do us a favor. Put in bold on your resume that your fraternity is 1 of the top 3 in terms of "bar pull" at Illinois. It will make reviewing your resume so much quicker.

I mean to be sure, it's not everything, but it's a pretty important component of becoming a "good" house in this context...

And the university administration is in bed with the bar owners - cracking down on fraternities so that we will spend money at the bars.

Not sure how bars get away with serving so many under-21 patrons either. It's like the law is really 19 in Champaign. And even that is a stretch - I have seen freshmen in the bars.

You saying bar owners don't contribute to the campaigns of the people that run this town? Who in turn have a say in how the university is run...

Or you saying that it is not easy for an 18 yo to get into bars here?

We try to get good bar pull so we can get cheap drinks everywhere you moron. We're not doing it for our resumes. You're not dropping any knowledge on us you just wasted your time writing this and it doesn't make any sense. Grow up.

Only put your fraternity on your resume if you were President, or MAYBE something like house manager or treasurer. Even then, some recruiters will think you are a douche.

We seriously doubt that you are a student at Illinois. ANY student at Illinois would be smart enough to recognize that the last paragraph is sarcasm and a not-so-subtle warning not to equate bar presence with fraternity values or prestige.
We also doubt that you were ever in a fraternity here. Men in fraternities would never characterize it as "douchy" to put their participation in their fraternity on their resumes. In fact, membership in a fraternity or sorority tells a potential employer that you are socially adept, outgoing, and that you have taken the opportunity to learn how to better interact and influence different types of people.
Our message is for the students AND it is simply this - don't get drawn into the fallacy that people like you push on this website that a fraternity's stature is somehow linked to its membership's bar attendance.

Well you seriously doubted wrong. I'm in a fraternity here and I love wvery second of being in my fraternity. Am I gonna put the name of it on here? No. I''m not gonna make my opinions look like the opinions of 150 other guys. But would I put it on my resume that I was a rush chair? No. Employers would think I'm a douche. And fraternity prestige doesn't do much for you in the real world. It's a great time when you're in college but don't make it more than it is. You make connections but this a bar school. Having access to cheap drinks is important.

Actually an alum, and love/loved my fraternity also. But the advice I gave is good. I think fraternity membership is a plus, but not everyone in a human resources department does. I was active in my fraternity but did not put it on my resume because I did not have a major position. It CAN be good for networking (I actually did get a job from a fellow alum, but trust me I am in the minority), but focus on grades and activities for resume-building.

I completely agree. If you just put your involvement in a fraternity that you hold no important exec positions in is a waste of space on your resume. They really don't care and it might even hurt you in trying to get a job unless you were president or something of similar responsibility.

Again - the point of this post has NOTHING to do with whether or not you put your participation in a fraternity on your resume. It is about RANKING fraternities as "TOP FRATS" based on their "bar pull." The only people that benefit from the suggestion that a fraternity's social reputation is inextricably tied to getting its members to go to the bars are BAR OWNERS AND BAR MANAGERS. They benefit from it financially. But for any fraternity or sorority student to fall for this ploy and support such an idea just makes our Greek System look bad. For those who are too stupid to understand that this was what the original post was about - put down your "cheap drinks" and THINK.
