by: sighhhhhhhhh

senior and feeling like i missed out on so much. is there any way to get more involved? any sororities doing COB or maybe work as a bartender? i wish there was a way to meet more people and end college with a bang. do greeks only hang out with each other, are there RSO's that people join to make friends? how do other gdis do it?

Recent grad here so I'll try to help. Some of my closest friends were people not in the greek system. The reality is that yeah, most greeks tend to hang out with other greeks, but it's easy to make friends in classes, clubs, wherever you work, etc.

"Block" is just when bars host a private tailgate for a few hours and then open it to the public.
"Senior Block" is a private tailgate at Sigma Chi's senior house. It's fun but people definitely overhype it on this site.

Bartending is a great way to meet people, both in houses and not in houses.

My advice: don't feel like you're missing out. Just go out and make friends and do what comes naturally. If you'd like to hit up the bars, then ask around and find a group of like-minded people that will do the same.

Enjoy the rest of your time at UIUC!

Outside of my fraternity, I made the most friends by talking to people that were in my classes. You already have one topic to talk about, so the ice is broken. You can share notes, study together, go for a drink/pizza after a test, whatever.

There are tons of clubs, join one about something that you are interested in. Bartending jobs are hard to get, and you probably won't make many friends in other jobs. So I would not get a job to make friends. Volunteering is also a great way to meet people.

Remember though - it is up to you to be open and friendly, it won't just fall in your lap. Friendships take effort. The fact that you expressed interest is already a good first step. I think most people at UofI are pretty friendly and laid back, so you should be fine. Good luck!

I''m always down to meet new people and I'm in a well connected/respected house! Let me know if you want to connect. Have you thought about Phi Mu?

Oh also try joining certain rsos that have strong social activities. For example, guys in my house are in biz frats and they go out all the time. That might not be feasible since its so late for you, but other clubs like the illini service dogs and others have active social groups
