phi mu looks promising...

by: pnm

Looking at phi mu chapters down south (almost always top/exclusive) and the alum support they have as the second oldest sorority - one of the historic macon magnolias, as well as those beautiful big white houses makes me think this chapter has a good chance, especially for just starting. any thoughts??

I think you're a Phi Mu hoping not to fall on your face during recruitment.

Couple thing:
This isn't the south. Comparisons are just silly..
Chapters of any houses have different girls/personalities across Avery campus. A theta here likely would not be a theta at every campus.
This chapter is not just. Starting here. Phi Mu folded here due to low numbers years ago.
No local phi Mu alum support as again this chapter closed here and struggled for years.

That being said, good luck in colonizing and coming back to UI. May you be successful!

I am sure their initial group will be very good. But they can only maintain that if they find a great house in a good location. Their old house was in a good location, but it was not the most attractive.

Where was their old house?

They were at 302 East Armory in Champaign. Acacia purchased the house in 2012.

Phi mu is not actually new. They were here and had been weak for years, at least since the mid 90s according to family. There's a reason they were weak then, and it's the reason they'll be weak now.

I suspect their group will be mostly girls who dropped formal recruitment or didn't get a bid. which could be really great because they'll be motivated to form a supportive community amongst themselves. I see it as a good back up plan for myself if formal recruitment doesn't play out for me.
ultimately though, where phi mu falls will be pretty much entirely based on the motivation of the phi mu's to establish themselves.

Don't ask for information on this site. Phi Mu will succeed or fail based on the girls they recruit. If you would like to be a part of it, you will have to work hard and do the best you can to make it a successful house here. Good luck!

Seems to me that the Phi Mu recruiters will not take just anyone, so you should not have the attitude that "If I can't get anything else, there is always Phi Mu." I don't know, but they might actually be more selective than some of the existing houses. I do know that their nationals was unhappy with the old Phi Mus that disbanded, and am pretty sure they will be at least somewhat selective this time around.

Just a warning that if your only offer is from a less prestigious house, you might regret not taking it assuming Phi Mu is a lock.

I am just speculating, but throwing this out there to think about.

This is stupid advice!

Who knows who PM will take...that actually depends on who looks at them. No one knows what PM will be like and to talk about offers from less prestigious houses is laughable especially when PM was at UI it had to FOLD due to being not desirable.

If you get a bid today, go and enjoy it!! You went through this process and the chapters you went to liked you and you kept going back! No guarantees with pm.

Do you understand that that is exactly the advice I just gave? You just repeated my point - if you get a bid, do not turn it down assuming you will fit in with Phi Mu.

In case it was unclear, by "less prestigious" I meant less prestigious compared to other existing houses.

Phi Mu will do very well. Like all the sororities here, their alums are from every chapter so quite a few live in the area already.
