how much does house avg. gpa actually matter?

by: sororityStat

People like to walk around with big heads because their house has a great GPA, so I decided to calculate statistically how big the distribution is and if the spread is big enough to be statistically significant.

The Data:
1-SDT 3.582
2-GPB 3.5264
3-AOPi 3.5101
4-ADPi 3.5094
5-XO 3.5058
6-DDD 3.4826
7-AEPhi 3.4809
8-Sigma Alpha 3.479
9-AGD 3.4787
10-KAT 3.475
11-KD 3.4728
12- Alpha Phi 3.4676
13- AXDI 3.4611
14-KKG 3.4362
15-4H 3.4351
16-DZ 3.4257
17-PBP 3.4228
18-DG 3.4157
19- AXO 3.3594
20. PhiSS 3.2521

We then weighted each house with the number of active members to find the mean of the population: 3.4454. The standard deviation was 0.1224.

What does this mean?

This means that the spread of the data is very very small, the only houses more than one standard deviation away from the mean are SDT and PSS. With such a small spread of data, this means that we really aren't all that different and that you aren't statistically significantly better than any of the other houses.

As a Engineering/History Major with a Business Minor, I have a lower GPA than all of the houses above and am a James Scholar with many internship prospects. To all those people who think intelligence is directly correlated to GPA, think again. Each major is different, each college inflates(or deflates) grades differently. Some students don't test well but are brilliant. GPA doesnt define you.

TL;DR House GPA Doesnt Matter

You can however say with 94% confidence that phi sig is dumber than average. That is, if you can even equate gpa to relative smartness

No, you cannot say with confidence that PSS is "dumber" than average unless you have taken the whole student population of IL into account. The "average" of the entire population may be much less than 3.2521 - in which case, PSS is "smarter" than average. Even when just considering the sororities alone, the difference in GPA is negligible.

IDK how you did a confidence interval given we have less than a "large number" of samples (i.e. only 18 houses) and the GPA is not normally distributed. Agree with @do your research first, without a normal distribution the spread is negligible.

Nice to see an informed opinion supported by facts on this site. I'm in a house with a below average GPA, and I'm doing really well in school and so are majority of my sisters. I know during rush some houses like to highlight their GPA and they should be proud if they are an individual who worked hard to contribute to that high number, but its important to put it in perspective. Moral of the story, comparing house GPA is irrelevant. It's like comparing apples and apples, they're the same thing fruit.

Bringing this post back because of all the posts about GPA. Im sick and tired of reading about how one house is so much better because of a fraction of a difference. You have to count in so many variable when trying to compare apples to apples and if you don't know all the specifics of each house (member number, majors, etc) then please just don't post anything since you don't know what you are talking about.

What's the sorority equivalent of Triangle?
Where do the girl engineers "get their groove on?"

I hope you don't get a job judging the Olympics! Everyone would get a gold medal. When you play football, if you only lose by 1 or 2 points do you get to count it as a win? Engineering majors are in every house so the average takes this into consideration. It's always amusing to see how people try to make it all right that they don't make top grades. It's all right. We're all millennials so we'll all get a trophy for grades this year!

Engineers are not in every house and there is no statistical difference in GPA and GPA does not define a house unless it is an academic one only competing with other academic houses. Also, no one is "trying to make all right" - they are just explaining the standard deviation makes GPA negligible in comparing houses. Obviously, more important traits like sisterhood, how genuine the girls are, how they treat others, etc. are taken into consideration more when selecting a house - as it should be.

One standard deviation is irrelevant in ranking for grades when there are so few houses. Take statistics. But of course you might not pass it since you're obviously from a house with lower grades.........

^^^^^^^^^^ is completely true. When there are just a few in the sample you don't rank by standard deviation because it's meaningless. The top houses work harder. That's all there is to it.
